Florida Stop the Ppower Shutoffs

Even though the pandemic continues, Florida utilities are set to resume power shutoffs — which they paused at the beginning of the pandemic — threatening the health of one million Floridians. Earthjustice responded by filing an emergency petition to the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC), which regulates the state’s utilities, requesting action to stop the disconnections and protect Florida families during the pandemic. Shutting power off for people who have lost income because of COVID-19 does not serve the public interest. We might be able to stop this ill-advised decision — but we’ll need your help.

The PSC is taking public comment on our petition, and we need to show overwhelming opposition to continued utility disconnections. HERE

Florida Power And Light Customers About To Take It Deep, Again!

Florida Power and Light is about to rack up another giant bill that customers
will end up paying for.
 ----------
FPL got state approval to charge customers for more than $241 million in “advanced recovery costs” for two more nuclear reactors at the company’s aging Turkey Point plant in Miami.

Now comes news that FPL is trying to get customers to foot the bill for another expensive, dubious project — a new power plant near Lake Okeechobee that’s projected to cost a whopping $1.2-billion.

A billion here, a billion there, and we end up paying the costs every month for the rest of our lives. The price tags are so high, our children and
our grandchildren will still be paying.

The kicker is that the power plant that FPL wants to build near Lake Okeechobee is not even necessary. here

Florida's Corporate Service Commission's Nuclear Power Fleecing

State utility regulators approved a request by Florida Power & Light to charge customers $34.2 million for a pair of nuclear reactors in Miami-Dade County. The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, a non-profit organization that seeks clean energy solutions to climate change, slammed the regulators' decision.

“Once again the financial interests of the public took a backseat to a big power company's excessive speculation favoring utility shareholders. While FPL spends hundreds of thousands of dollars crowing about the lack of consumer protections for a proposed solar ballot initiative, they and their political friends are silent about the lack of consumer protections in this nuclear power fleecing."

Florida's Culture Of Corruption: In-group and Out-group

Anyone who has attempted to expand the rooftop solar industry has been ostracized. The reason, Florida’s largest utilities have invested heavily in state political campaigns to fend off competition.

Campaign records show utility companies have sunk $12 million into the campaigns of state lawmakers since 2010.
That money comes from the bills paid by customers of the state’s four largest utilities — Duke Energy, Gulf Power, Florida Power & Light and Tampa Electric.
The recipient of the most utility money since 2010 is Gov. Rick Scott’s 2014 reelection campaign, which took in more than$1.1 million. here
