Support for Rob Lorei

Wow! What a turnout for last night’s WMNF Board meeting! Thank you! More than 150 people packed the boardroom and hallway outside to show the board what they thought of the decision to fire me. Later- during a closed session of the board I was given ten minutes to make my case that the firing should be overturned. The board members were polite and listened closely. An issue that board members kept raising was “Doesn’t Craig have the absolute right to fire any staffer- even if his reasons aren’t valid?” Clearly some board members lean to the conservative/corporate side when it comes to treatment of employees! Economist Richard Wolff would have some choice words for these board members.

What this means is that letters to the board still count. If you believe in enlightened employee relations please let them know. The board is likely to make a final decision this week. Like I said last night- it will take the rest of my life to thank you for supporting me by speaking last night, emailing, petitioning, calling and otherwise challenging this miscarriage of justice. However this turns out- when you see me- remind me of your support and I’ll buy you an adult beverage. Long May You Run!

Letter From Rob Lorei

Hi Everyone!

As some of you know I was fired from my WMNF Radio job last Monday and given 15 minutes to leave the place I’ve worked at since June 1978. There are no words to describe the feeling of being suddenly let go from the place I’ve dedicated my life to.

In the last five days I’ve been busy meeting and talking with hundreds of people who think the firing was wrong. Thanks to those friends, journalists, mayors, PBS CEOs, activists, politicians and listeners who have helped me get through this!

Yesterday I filed the first step in my appeal to get my job back. The ultimate decision about whether this termination was justified is up to the radio station’s board of directors. The fifteen member board will soon decide my fate by simple majority vote. I hope that if you are concerned about the firing that you will write our board president and ask him to share your message with all 15 board members.

We all want the station to survive this crisis and eventually become stronger. We are all better off with WMNF than without it. So please be civil in your interactions. My heroes include MLK and Ghandi who were peaceful, non-violent and persistent. That’s the way I hope we’ll all behave as we work to resolve this awful situation.

Bring Rob Lorei back to WMNF

 Fire Craig Kopp!

Rob Lorei has been a pillar of WMNF since its founding. His shows and interviews are loved by thousands of people in the Tampa Bay area.

This decision to fire him is not supported by the community.

We ask the Board of Directors and Craig to reinstate Rob as the news director or bring him back in some capacity to continue his show.

The show of support for Rob has been great. In about a day we already have almost a thousand signatures.

They gave Rob Lorei 15 minutes to leave the building

“Their (news) release tried to make it seem like we parted ways or something, but he fired me. He gave me 15 minutes to leave the building. That’s not a very nice way to end 40 years at the station.” HERE

Liberal New High In 2013

A recent Gallup poll now showing the numbers of Americans who self-identify as “liberal” are both growing and at higher rates than they’ve been in twenty years, the party of “no” and philosophies of greed may be facing an impending curtain call, in the face of the growing inequality which is shaping up to be the defining legacy of America’s long and costly experiment with conservative pro-corporate policies.......more>

Is Federal Spending Really Out Of Control?

I am trying my best not to become a cynical old fart in old age, if you call 51 old age. But the brainwashing of our country in the name of "what's best for the country" is sickening. We need less spending now, like we need a hole in the head. People losing their houses, jobs and eating the cheapest food they can find, are not free. We need smart spending i.e. in education to help the masses, not less taxes for the multi-nationals.

We had a balanced budget in 2001, and then Bush decided he had to spend 1 billion dollars a day in Iraq. Afghanistan is 10 billion per month; Libya is 300 million per month! Why is defense not in the austerity discussions? Wages have decreased over the last decade thanks to our free trade polices with un-developed nations and CEOs who farm our jobs out to these countries are making millions, as is Wall Street. Spreading the wealth in the name of the public good is American, so we can afford public programs that has made our country great i.e. LBJs Great Society programs.

Dog eat dog with a growing wage gap and poor in the streets is not American. It's time for the people to start demonstrating our ........ cynicism?, concerns for the country. For the Tampa area the WMNF web site would be a place to ogranize. They've already lost their government support.
