Florida GOP Leaders Back Cruz

While the government is shutdown hundreds of top state Republican Party donors and officials celebrated their party’s political success at a party in Disney World last week. The party is sending letters of support to Cruz and others in Congress who backed him. Hard-core party activists in the crowd weren’t worried about the shutdown, Jorge Bonilla, who hopes to run in 2014 against liberal bad-ass Rep. Alan Grayson of Orlando, called the shutdown “regrettable” and “an unfortunate failure of leadership,” which of course he blames on the Democratic-controlled Senate and

I started a petition on MoveOn.org urging our local public television station, WEDU 3, to ensure that the documentary "Citizen Koch"—which exposes the billionare Koch Brothers who helped launch the Tea Party—gets shown to the public. Now that Tea Party Republicans have shut down the government, it's more important than ever that we expose the Tea Party and its funders.  We need "Citizen Koch" on the air in Tampa. will you sign the petition I created urging WEDU 3 to take action?

Tampa Tribune Mainstreams Islamophobic, Anti-LGBT Florida Family Association

The Tampa Tribune published an article on the Florida Family Association's (FFA) campaign against the cable news network Al Jazeera America, failing to note the FFA's fringe Islamophobic and anti-LGBT views. Al Jazeera America's journalism has been lauded by media critics, but the network's recent launch triggered a wave of right-wing, Islamophobic backlash. Most notorious among Al Jazeera America's critics is David Caton, head of the FFA, who has launched a crusade to stop corporations from advertising on what he describes as the radical Islamist network.
In a September 22 article, the Tribune reported on Caton and the FFA's campaign: here

Rick Scott's Project Integrity

Last year, the Scott administration began a misguided effort to remove people from the voter rolls. The result was described by county Supervisors of Elections as an "embarrassment," "sloppy," and "disgusting." Now, Gov. Scott's Secretary of State is travelling across Florida trying to sell people on the idea that it should be tried again.

Once You Go Indie You Never Go Back

Olive Garden saw a 4 percent drop in sales over the summer. Red Lobster is down 5.2 percent. And that’s in spite of efforts to promote new lighter dishes, small plates and better deals. Now their parent company, Orlando based Darden, is replacing its president and cutting 80 to 85 staff positions to save $50 million. Some analysts say the middle class isn’t eating out as much. Post-recession, that is true. The restaurant industry overall is in a battle with the fast-casual options of Noodles & Co., Chipotle and Panera. People want deals and they want quality. And more and more, we want local. Once I was exposed to indie restaurants and learned the awesome that is buying and supporting local, I just wasn’t interested in big-chain dining......more

Florida's Panhandle Big City Homies

North Florida pols (republicans) have packed their state House districts with a particularly low-maintenance category of citizens. The kind who don’t show up at townhall meetings clamoring about too much traffic or lousy parks or crumbling bridges or under-funded schools or the need for more cops on the beat. They never, ever complain about too few cops. Best of all they don’t go around town grumbling that folks should vote for that other candidate. They can’t. They can’t vote. They’re state prisoners.......more
