Debris pickup ongoing in hard hit Tampa Bay areas from Hurricane Idalia


Clean-up and debris pick-up is ongoing in hard-hit areas of Tampa Bay from Hurricane Idalia.

Several counties are still recovering from flooding and damage from the storm in the area from the Shore Acres neighborhood in St. Petersburg to communities around Weeki Wachee. Debris and trash pickup began in the last week in areas like Citrus and Hernando counties, but more progress needs to be made for some.

St. Pete mayor expands emergency housing for those impacted by Hurricane Idalia

St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch expanded emergency housing options on Saturday for residents impacted by Hurricane Idalia and severe flooding, according to a news release. 

Due to the limited number of options involving temporary shelter for people in flood-impacted neighborhoods, Mayor Ken Welch authorized the use of recreational vehicles and travel trailers on residential lots, the release explained.

Ron DeSantis announces new counties getting FEMA help in Idalia’s wake


Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Saturday that six new counties have been added by the federal government to the Major Disaster Declaration by the Federal Emergency Management Agency after Hurricane Idalia.

Columbia, Gilchrist, Hernando, Jefferson, Madison, and Pasco counties were added in the Saturday announcement, joining Citrus, Dixie, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Suwannee and Taylor, announced earlier this week.

Residents can apply for Individual Assistance at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362.

The Florida Department of Emergency Management Recovery Bureau notified Hernando County officials that a FEMA Federal Declaration for Individual Assistance application was approved for Hernando County resulting from the impacts of Hurricane Idalia.

Individuals wishing to apply for FEMA assistance are asked to go to FEMA.gov and click on Apply for Assistance.

Tropical Storm Idalia forecast to intensify, hurricane watch issued for Tampa Bay area


Tropical Storm Idalia is forecast to intensify into a hurricane on Monday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Officials said Tropical Storm Idalia is moving at 7 mph and is located about 150 miles south of the western tip of Cuba.

Meteorologists said Idalia’s winds are near 65 mph, with higher gusts.
