Stronger hurricanes push scientists to investigate considering a Category 6

As the Earth warms, more heat energy is available to fuel stronger hurricanes. A new study finds that tropical cyclones are indeed achieving greater peak winds and that the trend will continue into the future.

With this in mind, the two authors of the study, Dr. Michael Wehner and Dr. Jim Kossin — both leading researchers at the intersection of hurricane and climate change research — investigate the question of whether it’s time to add another category — a Category 6 with winds of 192 mph or greater — to the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Tracking the Tropics: Are above-average hurricane seasons the new normal?

We’re officially past the halfway mark of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, but that doesn’t mean we’re done seeing storms.

Already, Colorado State University Senior Research Scientist and renowned hurricane specialist Phil Klotzbach told WFLA.com there have been about 70% more named storms than the whole season average dating back to 1961.

Tropical wave near Africa forecast to be tropical storm, possible hurricane, models predict

“While the Atlantic Ocean is active right now, the tropical wave near Africa known as 95L is the only one heading west,” Max Defender 8 Leigh Spann said. “The system should organize and become Tropical Storm Lee. In fact, some models strengthen it to a Category 2 or 3 hurricane. We will keep an eye on it as it gets closer to the Caribbean during the next two weeks.”....MORE

Tracking Idalia’s impacts in Tampa Bay

While it will feel more humid today in the Tampa Bay area, there will be no direct impacts from Tropical Storm Idalia today. Temperatures climb into the low 90s with a 60% chance of afternoon and evening downpours.

The rain bands from Idalia start arriving tomorrow afternoon as the system strengthens in the Gulf of Mexico.

Those bands will push from south to north, and wind gusts could reach 20-30 mph at times.

Idalia is expected to make landfall just north of the Tampa Bay area early Wednesday. Our strongest wind gusts will be overnight Tuesday and through Wednesday morning. An onshore wind flow combined with higher tides due to the super moon will lead to coastal flooding in many areas. Storm surge could reach 7-10 feet in Citrus & Hernando counties. The surge will be slightly lower for Pasco & Pinellas.

The storm races off the northeast after landfall Wednesday morning, and our wind quickly calms down. We are left with scattered afternoon storms Thursday and Friday, and it should be drier for the weekend.

Tropical activity starting to increase

Fox 13 meteorologist Jim Weber is watching two areas of disturbed weather. Jim says one area is moving towards the west but is starting to diminish and only has a ten percent chance of turning into a storm. Jim is also watching one system working its way off the coast of Africa. Models say it could weaken over the weekend due to wind shear.

When will hurricane season pick up?

FOX 13 Meteorologist Jim Weber says there is hardly a cloud in the sky in the Caribbean. He says there are no signs of anything developing in the tropics in the near future. According to Weber, the dry Saharan air that is working its way across the Atlantic is keeping things quiet in the tropics over the next week. He does caution that things may pick up as we head into September.
