Nina Tatlock for Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida Vice President

I am excited to announce my candidacy for Vice President of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida. This is an organization that I feel strongly about and, if you are a voting member of DPCF, I would like to ask for your support and vote.

Here's my bio:

Nina Tatlock (she/her) began her journey as an organizational volunteer in the year 2000 as a Founding Board member and Vice President for Art IN Hand Gallery, an Artist Cooperative Gallery in Zionsville, Indiana, which she is happy to report is still in existence today. After moving to Florida, Nina was elected to the South Shore Arts Council in 2008, serving terms, off and on, multiple times, in positions of Secretary, Vice President, and Treasurer (currently).  In 2010, she served as a Founding Board member of the Firehouse Cultural Center in Ruskin, FL and served on that Board for several years. Nina has also served off and on for her Homeowners Association in Apollo Beach as Secretary, Vice President, and President during the 2017-2018 two year term. Nina has a Bachelor of Science from Purdue University in Consumer and Family Sciences and an Associate of Science from Indiana University in Optometric Technology. She has spent a number of years working as a Fiber Artist, exhibiting and teaching fiber art techniques. Nina is a political activist, an elected Precinct Committee Woman in Hillsborough County, and serves on the Steering Committee of her DEC as Chair of the Platform Committee.  Nina was one of the founding members of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Tampa Bay in 2017 serving in leadership early on and as President for a two year term, from March 2019 to March 2021. She currently holds a board member position, continues to do committee work, and as Co-Chair of the Outreach Committee of DPCTB is working to maintain and foster relationships in the community. Nina was a Florida PLEO Delegate for Bernie Sanders to the Democratic National Convention in 2020.  She has been a member of DPCF since 2015, actively participating on the campaign committee since 2017, a contributing member of the Chapter Development Ad Hoc Committee, and was elected to the DPCF Board in 2021.

Nina was following politics and Bernie Sanders before he became a Presidential Candidate. As a curious individual she started doing personal research as to why Corporations usually seemed to win in Supreme Court cases and found that bad SCOTUS decisions went way back, but an especially egregious decision in 1886 was the one that allowed corporate personhood by legal fiction and that this was because of an insertion from a court reporter and not even by a Supreme Court Justice. Nina started following various progressive organizations such as Progressive Democrats of America and followed the push for Bernie to run for President.  She volunteered to knock on Doors in 2010 to help get a Democrat elected as Governor of Florida and as Senator. This coincided with the rise of the tea party culminating in the election of Rick Scott and Marco Rubio. She decided that even though politics were bad in Indiana, where she came from, things were much worse in Florida.  Nina's goals are to continue to push the Democratic party leftward; to work on reform within the party; to engage with community members; to engage voters; to engage with various progressive organizations; to continue to work on getting more candidates, who will abide by the Progressive Platform, elected locally, statewide, and nationally; and to continue to push for progressive legislation that will work for the people who are not corporations. Nina feels that we need to get business out of our governments, that we ultimately need a new Constitution that is not built on racism or property ownership/rights, and that will include the rights of nature. In the meantime, there is a lot of work that can be done through DPCF, our local Progressive Caucus Chapters and in our County DECs.

Nina Tatlock: Don’t be silent

I'm not a blogger, but a friend asked me to write something. I'm not even sure if I know much. We have been gaslit right and left, so who knows what is true or not. Can we trust anyone these days? I do know that I have a lot of opinions and that I hang out with people who have a lot of opinions.

I like opinionated people. People who think and expand their ways of thinking by having open dialogue. We need to have conversations. We need to keep learning always. Keep reading the banned books. Here are more thoughts & opinions. I'll start with the BIG elephant in the room or state, which is the Republican Party in total control of our state government. They are governing as Fascist, Dominionists, backed up by Nazis, crooks, liars, sleezebags and their ilk. If you haven't heard of dominionism theology, you should look that up. It's a shitshow up in Tallahassee with all of these dominionist/Nazi laws (like bills wanting to make Bloggers register) being brandied about, trying to stick it to the Dems, demonrats or whatever they want to call people in the opposition party.

Since Florida is a closed primary state (highly gerrymandered at that), it is necessary for voters to select one of the 2 main parties in order to vote in Florida's primary elections. It is a form of voter suppression. There are many other forms of voter suppression in the state also. The Republicans up in Tallahassee seem to undo or work around every voter initiative we pass. They are relentless in their dominionism. It's the only way that this radical minority can lord over the majority of us. I personally am of the opinion that primary elections are the most important elections because it is when voters can vote for the candidate they like the best. I would prefer a semi-open primary system that allows more participation, but alas that's not what we currently have. So I'm always asking people to pick a party before our primary elections. It is the system we currently have.

Now my take on the opposition party, the FDP, Florida Democratic Party. In case you haven't heard the FDP just held an election to "select" a new Chair of the state Democratic Party. This was another shitshow of authoritarian dominance because of Bylaws and rules of the FDP. When all was said and done, it felt more like a vote that would take place in Russia, whereas the vote has a pre-determined outcome. Which is like many elections we have witnessed throughout the USA in our lifetimes. This FDP Chair race brought on so much sadness and exhaustion just like most other elections. Those at the top seem oblivious to what people out in our communities actually want and need. This is true of both political parties. Oh and by the way, the Republican Dominionists have filed a bill to outlaw the Democratic Party, which would probably also outlaw the Republican party at the same time if this bill were to pass. So I'm thinking of new party names just in case. Here's one: WIGS+ (We Include Gays & Socialists +). I know many people think that participation in both parties is a waste of time, but these parties are just made up of people.. It is very easy for them to just ignore those who are not participating. Yes sometimes they ignore those who do participate, but if we are not in the room, we can't even let them know that we know they are ignoring us. If we are not there, we become invisible. Let's not become invisible. Let's not let the radical Dominionist minority lord over the majority. Participating is work. It's not easy work, but we have to keep sharing, conversing, exploring, learning ways to work together as a majority. We need to keep voting. If you live in Tampa, please vote in the Municipal elections taking place right now.

And all of this while my homeowners insurance almost doubled, and others are having a hard time affording rent, food and things that are needed to have a decent life. It's getting hard to find places to live or to feel safe. Still we can't be silent or become invisible. Please find ways to be involved. FYI, this isn't blogging, it's rambling. Nina Tatlock

Nina Tatlock's Letter To Dems

Yesterday I called and sent email to our Democratic Party leadership. I thought I would share what I wrote in case any of you might like to call and email also.
This is what I just Emailed to Chuck Schumer (also called Speaker Pelosi.

Dear Senator Schumer,
I would like to request that leadership of the Democratic Party please put Senator Bernie Sanders and the Democratic Progressive Caucus in charge of the response to this corona virus pandemic. We need the full throttle of bold initiatives being put forward at this time. This is a time to ask for the most that our Federal Government can give toward the Constitutionally called for General welfare. This is a time to have a government that works for the people who are not corporations.

Sincerely,

Nina Tatlock
