Florida's Culture Of Corruption

Corporations that pollute have been donating to the GOP, to Florida Realtors and to the Florida Chamber of Commerce. In turn those organizations promote and endorse the candidates with the failing voting records on water. Those candidates look the other way while corporations like Big Sugar lobby to weaken water protections. Many politicians like to say they are strong on water but they don't do what it would actually take to keep our waters clean. For example, Rooney has a F voting record on water and he took money from the oil industry. HERE

FLORIDA: SILENT, SNEAKY SUGAR PLAN EXPOSED!

Under the cover of a global pandemic, lobbyists for the sugar cartel are trying to slip in language to the federal Water Resources & Development Act (WRDA) of 2020 that will make toxic discharges more likely and starve the Everglades and Florida Bay of the freshwater they desperately need. HERE

Florida Inc. Killing Dolphins?

Toxic algae blooms could be linked to a brain disease similar to Alzheimer's, according to a new study published by researchers at the University of Miami.

The seven Florida dolphins that were studied were found in areas with toxic recurring algal blooms - the Atlantic Ocean, the Banana River, the Indian River Lagoon and the Gulf of Mexico.

Florida's Sugar Racket

The sugar program, known to its many critics as the “sugar racket,” is a tangle of price supports, which increase the cost of sugar in the U.S., and tariffs and quotas on imported sugar, which keeps cheaper sugar from reaching our market.
----------
“There’s probably no better example in U.S. history of a case of both legal plunder and crony capitalism that has been tolerated for so many years, and that has picked more money from the pockets of Americans,” than the sugar program, says American Enterprise Institute economist Mark J. Perry
----------
But it’s a great deal for the three Florida companies that produce nearly half of the country’s sugar supply: U.S. Sugar, the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida, and the Fanjul Corp., which has helped fund Sen. Marco Rubio’s political career.
----------
Tthis program is causing environmental wreckage in Florida that their tax dollars will have to pay for.

Florida's Culture Of Corruption: Big Sugar

The sugar industry has an edge over supporters of a plan to buy land to reduce Lake Okeechobee discharges, at least when it comes to the money both sides spent in political contributions in the 2016 election cycle.  Florida's sugar growers gave more than
$11.5 million
to campaigns and political committees since the end of 2014. Compare that to
$561,000
from board members and top employees at the Everglades Foundation and Everglades Trust. here

The Keys Paying The Fox To Guard The Hen House

Monroe County commissioners, on record endorsing a freshwater storage area south of Lake Okeechobee to improve water flows into the Everglades, want to know where their paid lobbyist stands.
Commissioner Danny Kolhage said at Wednesday’s meeting in Key West that he would not vote to keep Tallahassee lobbyist Frank Bernardino’s firm on a county contract.
“They represent Big Sugar,” Kolhage said of the firm. “That’s an inherent conflict and I cannot vote for it.” here

Florida Sugar Daddies: $57.8 Million

While the Everglades still struggle years after a landmark state and federal agreement on restoration plans, Florida Division of Elections records show tens of millions in political contributions from an industry that environmentalists blame for pollution in the wetlands.
The sugar industry, led by United States Sugar and Florida Crystals, steered $57.8 million in direct and in-kind contributions to state and local political campaigns between 1994 and 2016, according to a review of state elections records by the Tallahassee bureau shared by The Miami Herald and the Tampa Bay Times. here

Florida Sugar Daddies: Rick Scott And Marco Rubio

Standing just feet away from putrid algae fouling local waters last week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio questioned whether buying land south of Lake Okeechobee to build reservoirs to reduce discharges would help clean the St. Lucie River.  Another elected official who hasn't publicly supported buying land is Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who's been noncommittal despite reporters asking for his stance several times in recent years.  Rubio and Scott have another thing in common: They've received the most campaign contributions from the sugar industry. here

Florida's Culture Of Corruption: Florida INC. CEO Rick Scott

Florida INC. CEO Rick Scott has resisted clean water standards, disparages environmental regulations. Earlier this year, he signed a law that essentially allows  Florida INC. Big Ag to police itself when it comes to fertilizer pollution. And last year, Scott’s appointees on the South Florida Water Management District scuttled plans to buy 46,800 acres of sugar company land below the lake where the state had once planned to build giant retention ponds to store and filter the polluted lake water. here

Free Lube For Florida GOP Voters Who Like To Take It Deep

The ecological disaster in the St. Lucie River and the Caloosahatchee River, including the Everglades and Florida Bay, is a toxic warning to taxpayers and voters that they cannot trust Florida INC. CEO Rick Scott or his board of directors who have allowed poor water policies to poison and degrade Florida's most valuable resources.
-----------
Scott implemented his agenda of promoting big business donors by killing growth management, stacking the water management districts, signing harmful legislation, setting in motion a political ideology that has ignored science and fact, and killing responsible government efforts to address environmental problems. here

America This Is Your Florida. Do Something About It. Help Us

Algae is everywhere in the southern part of the Treasure Coast, and it's spreading.  Last weekend, all public beaches in Martin County, and many in St. Lucie County, were closed. Ocean waters turned emerald green. here

Rick Scott and the Florida GOP are in the sugar industry's pocket. This is the stuff of destitute Third World backwaters.  This is Rick Scott's Florida.  This is "Big Sugar's" Florida.  This is our Florida.  America, this is your Florida.  Do something about it. Help us. The nation as a whole needs to hear more about this. A national spotlight needs to be shined on the likes of Scott and the sugar industry, with the clear message: in the wake of our own Love Canal, our own Three Mile Island, these people chose the status quo. And as a result, a beautiful coastal region that ought to be a national treasure has been turned into a toilet.
Tourist and locals beware: The toxins can cause nausea and vomiting if swallowed. Touching can lead to a rash and breathing may lead hay fever symptoms. Liver disease is linked to drinking water with toxins.

Florida's Culture Of Corruption: Rick Scott

With another $100,000 donation earlier this month, the US Sugar Corporation has become one of Gov. Rick Scott top financial supporters. Since October, US Sugar has now given Scott $200,000 in donations for a political committee Scott runs called Let’s Get to Work. In hitting the $200,000 threshold, US Sugar became one of Scott’s five biggest donors since the start of 2015. here

Florida GOP Voters Are Rebelling

Republican voters are in full rebellion against the GOP in Florida. In last week's presidential primary, GOP voters treated Marco Rubio as a stand-in for the special interests who dominate party politics. They might not know the names but they know the outcomes.
As a result, the party establishment has been thrown into a panic. This one is filled with voter anger at both Florida coasts coated by a layer of toxic scum, as the state's rivers, bays and estuaries are turning to collateral damage by the state's most powerful special interest group, Big Sugar. here
