It looks like "Toilet to Tap" is officially kaput.
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor on Thursday removed a request for $300 million that would have funded the program in her public works budget. HERE

John Godwin for Tampa
“I couldn’t accept his continued neglect of our communities of color, our LGBT neighbors, and our environment. Flipping this seat from Miranda to me will result in a more progressive approach that the council has needed for nearly 30 years.”
---
Promising new and innovative leadership, Godwin said he will help prepare Tampa to be a 21st century city while protecting its history and character. more

Charlie Miranda No Chance Against Guido
Charlie Miranda is eligible to run for re-election to his citywide seat. His disagreements with Guido Maniscalco have led to speculation that he could jump to the District 6 race to challenge Maniscalco. here

Hispanic Politicians In Tampa Fight Back
"This is a blatant slap in the face to my constituents in District 62 and the Hispanic community," state Rep. Janet Cruz, D-Tampa, said at the news conference Tuesday.
Tampa City Council Chairman Charlie Miranda and Hillsborough County School Board member Susan Valdes were also present.
The bill, HB 235, would have allowed some children of undocumented immigrants who are not U.S. citizens to
get a Florida driver's license through President Barack Obama's "Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals" policy,
which was instituted last year. HB 235 passed unanimously in the state Senate and 115-2 in the House.

Hispanic Commission District
From one of my favorite local writers, Sue Carlton,
That's right. The very same commission that could not muster the goodwill to pass a domestic partner registry, the one that thought an applicant opposed to Muslims and gays would be great for a diversity board, agreed to explore giving a Hispanic representative a better shot. Interestingly, in the past when this came up, Republicans on the GOP-dominated board helped kill it, presumably not willing to weaken the stranglehold they enjoy. One of the best things about Tampa and the county around it is who built it. In Miami where I come from, relationships between ethnic groups can be fractious. So it was interesting to settle in a place where Cuban, Spanish and Italian roots have long been part of the fabric.

She asked Charlie Miranda, a longtime Hispanic leader in these parts: If this new district thing happens — and that's a big if — might he run? (What fun: outspoken, no-nonsense Miranda, a Democrat by the way, in that political mix.) "No," he says at first, and then, "Possibly."
