Florida town, students resist letting state’s war on Black history be forgotten
The small town of Ocoee, Florida is the site of an infamous race massacre, the result of white people's outrage over a pair of Black men attempting to vote. The town, and students who want to know the state's history, as well as their own, are pushing back against new state education standards from the DeSantis administration, that would distort and dilute the teaching of this important event.

Florida’s new Black history standards are misleading and offensive
Florida’s Board of Education recently released new Black history standards. They require that middle school students learn “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied to their personal benefit.” The board also mandated that the high school curriculum for the 1920 Ocoee, Florida Election Day Massacre include “acts of violence perpetrated against and by African Americans.”....MORE
