Columbia student sues Trump admin over efforts to deport her

Columbia University student Yunseo Chung is suing the Trump administration amid its efforts to deport the 21-year-old, who has been in the U.S. since she was 7 and has lawful permanent resident status.

A lawsuit was filed Monday after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) got an administrative warrant for Chung’s arrest and told the South Korean native that her status was being “revoked,” even though only an immigration judge can take away a green card.

“ICE’s shocking actions against Ms. Chung form part of a larger pattern of attempted U.S. government repression of constitutionally protected protest activity and other forms of speech. The government’s repression has focused specifically on university students who speak out in solidarity with Palestinians and who are critical of the Israeli government’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza or the pro-Israeli policies of the U.S. government and other U.S. institutions,” the suit reads.

But at a tense hearing in Washington, DC, on Monday, one judge on the court appeared to baulk at the lack of due process given to undocumented people under Trump’s use of the law.

World Israel threatens Gaza's residents with "complete destruction" if Hamas doesn't hand over hostages

Israel's defense minister threatened earlier this week to open "the gates of hell" in Gaza if Hamas refuses to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's demands, and Israel has been delivering. At least 58 people were killed in a third consecutive night of airstrikes up and down the Palestinian territory, bringing the death toll to an estimated 500 people since the ceasefire was shattered with Tuesday's shock pre-dawn Israeli missile barrages, according to the enclave's Hamas-run Ministry of Health.

"Residents of Gaza, this is a final warning," he said in a video broadcast Wednesday afternoon. "If all the Israeli hostages are not released and Hamas is not eliminated from Gaza Israel will act with forces you have never known before. Take the advice of the U.S. President. Return the hostages and eliminate Hamas, and other options will open up for you — including going to other places in the world for those who wish. The alternative is complete destruction and devastation."

Less than 2% of the Palestinian populatiom support or identify with the Hamas organization.

The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), was created through an act of Congress in 1984, shortly after a nuclear standoff with the-then Soviet Union, in order to study peaceful resolutions to conflict around the world.

Bernie Sanders is standing alone on the back of a pickup truck shouting into a bullhorn.

He’s facing several hundred ecstatic voters huddled outside a suburban Detroit high school — the group that did not fit inside the high school’s gym or two overflow rooms. The crowd screams in delight when he tells them that a combined total of 9,000 people had shown up for the rally.

“What all of this tells me, is not just in Michigan or in Vermont, the people of this country will not allow us to move toward oligarchy. They will not allow Trump to take us into authoritarianism,” Sanders yelled. “We’re prepared to fight. And we’re going to win.”

Letters from an American March 9, 2025

Lately, political writers have called attention to the tendency of billionaire Elon Musk to refer to his political opponents as “NPCs.” This term comes from the gaming world and refers to a nonplayer character, a character that follows a scripted path and cannot think or act on its own, and is there only to populate the world of the game for the actual players. Amanda Marcotte of Salon notes that Musk calls anyone with whom he disagrees an NPC, but that construction comes from the larger environment of the online right wing, whose members refer to anyone who opposes Donald Trump’s agenda as an NPC.....MORE

Amid a growing measles outbreak, doctors worry RFK is sending the wrong message

Two people have now died in the growing measles outbreak in west Texas and New Mexico.

New Mexico Health officials on Thursday confirmed the death of an unvaccinated adult who tested positive for measles. The first death was a school-age child in Gaines County, Texas last week.

News of a second death comes as infectious disease doctors worry that the federal government's messaging about the outbreak is putting more emphasis on treatments like vitamin A than on vaccination, even as misinformation about some of these treatments is spreading online.

Why VA mental health workers feel Elon Musk's emails are psychological warfare

Elon Musk has called his "What did you do last week?" emails to the entire federal workforce "pulse check" reviews.

"Do you have a pulse and two neurons?" he said to laughter at a White House Cabinet meeting last week.

Some mental health professionals with the Veterans Health Administration do not find it funny. They liken the email campaign to psychological warfare: a blitz attack, with each email hitting like a flash-bang grenade aimed at discombobulating the federal workforce.
