“Students Against Fascism in Education” protest New College of Florida’s new presidential pick

Former Republican House Speaker Richard Corcoran was chosen yesterday as New College of Florida’s permanent president after serving less than a year as interim president. The move further solidifies a veritable conservative grip on the traditionally liberal arts school as part of myriad of changes after Republican Governor Ron DeSantis appointed a majority of the Board of Trustees with conservative allies earlier this year, which ousted past president Patricia Okker, and replaced her promptly with Corcoran. Even before the decision was announced, dozens of students gathered on campus in protest of the decision.....MORE

New year at New College begins with change, confusion and many questions

Our visit to New College of Florida in Sarasota began at the dorms, where new students were still settling in and returning students were settling back into a new reality on campus.  “Uh- scary, I think,” is how Marshall Bustamante described the start of his fourth and final year at New College.  Just before the start of the semester, he learned earning his senior stripes no longer guaranteed him first choice at senior digs.

Is Bigger Always Better?

DeSantis Champions The “New” New College Of Florida Where Enrollment Soared As The School Shifted Right

The months-long effort to purge Florida’s smallest public university of its woke ideology has produced big dividends, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office announced on Friday.

New College in Sarasota, a tiny school whose curriculum is focused on the humanities, “is experiencing record enrollment with an increase of over 300 students this year, marking the highest enrollment of new students in school history,” the governor’s office said in a press release.

DESANTIS EDUCATION: How New College of Florida has failed

“This fall will mark the first new academic year since DeSantis began his overhaul of the liberal arts college, the smallest public institution in Florida, by appointing six new conservative trustees. Many students were nervous about returning to NCF under the new leadership, which in short order fired former president Patricia Okker, axed the diversity, equity, and inclusion office, and denied five faculty members tenure. But as the fall semester inches closer, it is becoming increasingly apparent just how much dysfunction New College’s students will have to contend with this year.”....MORE

New College Of Florida Trustees Move To Abolish Gender Studies Program

The New College of Florida (NCF) board of trustees voted Thursday to direct the administration of the institution to abolish its gender studies program, according to Chris Rufo, a member of the board.

In January, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed six new conservative members to the NCF board of trustees in an effort to overhaul the ideological education system. Since being appointed, the board has voted to eliminate the college’s diversity, equity and inclusion office (DEI) and ban the use of diversity statements.

Teachers removed across the state, their concerns for state's education system

At the beginning of this year, Governor Ron DeSantis made it his mission to reshape New College of Florida, a state liberal arts college, as part of his battle against what he calls "woke" ideology.  DeSantis appointed six conservative members to the college’s Board of Trustees and removed the school’s president to hire Former House Speaker and State Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran.  Since those changes, professors at New College have been let go, and they’re not the only ones.

DeSantis signs 3 bills ending CRT, DEI spending in higher education

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed several higher education bills into law Monday while speaking at New College of Florida in Sarasota.

Among the bills signed was SB 266, which uses broader definitions to limit, but not eliminate, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in colleges and universities in the state.

The law prohibits colleges and universities from spending public dollars on DEI initiatives that promote “dangerous political and social activism,” prevents the teaching of critical race theory, and DEI in general education courses, and bars programs, majors, minors, and curriculum based on these and related theories.

‘Go to Berkeley’: Ron DeSantis said students seeking ‘woke’ classes should study elsewhere

If students want to study critical race theory or gender ideology, Gov. Ron DeSantis says they should leave Florida.

“Go to Berkeley. Go to some of these other places. That’s fine,” he said. “If that’s what you want to do, there’s nothing wrong with that, per se. But for us with our tax dollars, we want to focus on the classical mission of what a university is supposed to be.”
