Florida bill could establish ‘fetal personhood’


The Florida Senate is on the way to passing a bill that critics say would establish “fetal personhood” in civil liability cases.

But Democrats and critics of the bill argued it’s a roundabout way of creating fetal personhood, a belief that a fetus should be recognized as a legal and moral person with rights, often including the right to life, from the moment of conception.

Listen to the oral arguments at the Florida Supreme Court over Amendment 4 on abortion rights


On Feb. 7, the Florida Supreme Court heard oral arguments about a proposed constitutional amendment regarding abortion rights. If the State Supreme Court allows the issue on the ballot it will be Amendment 4.

Arguing against the amendment going on November’s ballot were Florida’s Senior Deputy Solicitor General Nathan A. Forrester and Matt Staver.

Arguing for Amendment 4 going on the 2024 ballot was Courtney Brewer, the attorney for the group supporting the abortion rights ballot initiative, Floridians Protecting Freedom.

The Supreme Court Justices weighed in with questions: Chief Justice Carlos G. Muñiz and Justices Charles T. Canady, Jorge Labarga, John D. Couriel, Jamie R. Grosshans, Renatha Francis and Meredith L. Sasso.

Supreme Court to hear abortion pill arguments in March


The Supreme Court will hear arguments on March 26 in a case that could limit the availability of the common abortion pill mifepristone. 

The justices will hear an appeal from the Biden administration and the maker of the branded version of mifepristone asking the high court to reverse a ruling from a federal appeals court that significantly curtailed access to the pill, even in states where abortion remains fully legal.

Supreme Court’s looming mifepristone decision leaves abortion rights in spotlight


The Supreme Court’s expected decision this summer on whether to restrict access to medication abortion promises to keep the issue front and center of the 2024 election.

Justices will hear a case weighing federal approval of the common abortion pill mifepristone, with a likely ruling in June — five months before voters decide who will go to the White House and Congress, and almost exactly two years after the high court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion.
