Florida politicians are waging war on workers. Not even astronauts or baseball players are safe.

The Florida Legislature’s 2023 session is only two weeks old, but it is already shaping up as a terrible one for workers.

The most obvious examples are Senate Bill 256 and House Bill 1445, a pair of aggressively anti-union bills that Gov. Ron DeSantis is driving through the Legislature as he loads up to run for the Republican nomination for president.

Since 2021, when Florida lawmakers passed a bill targeting trans athletes, later signed into law by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Republicans in the state have gained more power.

And this year, they’ve unveiled what Equality Florida has dubbed a “slate of hate bills,” driven in no small part by DeSantis’ stated priorities, including the “protection” of children from queerness, as he prepares to (likely) run for president in 2024.

Bill restricting use of preferred pronouns at school advances

A bill is advancing that would change the rules around the use of preferred pronouns at Florida’s public schools.

Republican Sen. Clay Yarborough’s bill (SB 1320) would also ban classroom instruction related to sexual orientation or gender identity until the ninth grade. It advanced at its first committee stop along party lines in front of the Senate Committee on Pre-K-12.

State’s largest teachers’ union slams school choice legislation ‘checks to millionaires’
