Breadcoin meal token program
There’s a new kind of coin circulating downtown Tampa called Breadcoin. These pay for breakfast, lunch, and coffee at participating restaurants at no cost to food vendors. The nonprofit program is funded by recurring donations and corporate gifts. The coins are given out instead of cash by folks who work with the homeless. Each coin is worth $2.50, with no change given. About 5,000 coins are currently in circulation.

Throughout the week, we’ll be uplifting the work of survivors across the country and lived experiences with gun violence to highlight the ripple effect of trauma caused by gun violence and the collective action these changemakers are taking to fortify their communities and move towards healing.

In two weeks, on January 20th, a swarm of small pirates will invade the streets of downtown Tampa at the annual Children’s Gasparilla.
A staple of Tampa’s Gasparilla festivities since 1947, Ye Mystic Krewe’s annual Children’s Gasparilla Parade sees more than 100 costumed krewes, marching bands and dance groups march up Bayshore Boulevard.

Justices will hear a case weighing federal approval of the common abortion pill mifepristone, with a likely ruling in June — five months before voters decide who will go to the White House and Congress, and almost exactly two years after the high court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion.
The huge illuminated Knight Parade returns to Ybor City this February
Get ready for the best night parade in the south. The Krewe of the Knights of Sant’ Yago Knight Parade is an annual celebration of Tampa civic pride since 1974 — and the 2024 edition is set for February 10 at 7pm. Every February, costumed participants, illuminated floats, marching bands, and special guests parade through Ybor City, with thousands of spectators and families lining Seventh Avenue.
