Voucher program expansion could take away $848M from Tampa Bay public schools

Florida lawmakers are pushing for an expansion of the state’s charter school voucher program. While legislature estimates put the cost of the expansion at just shy of $210 million for the state budget, policy impact analysts put the overall cost at roughly $4 billion.

For 10 counties in the Tampa Bay area, the voucher legislation, House Bill 1, could mean almost $850 million gets moved from public schools to charter schools in the 2023-2024 school year, according to estimates by the Florida Policy Institute.

Universal school choice legislation heading to the House floor

An amended version of the House’s legislation that will expand school choice to all students is advancing and will now head for the House floor.

Some Democrats voted with the majority to advance the bill.

The new version of the school choice bill (HB 1) still offers vouchers for all students, regardless of family income, but it’s going to make it so that public schools can compete on a more even playing field, supporters say. It loosens some regulations regarding student transportation and certification, to name a few.

Protestors gather in Tampa amid DeSantis' stance on course material in classrooms

New calls for change in the Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis administration’s stance on course material in state classrooms were heard Monday afternoon as demonstrators gathered in Tampa, Orlando and Miami to voice their concerns.

Some said they had to travel from areas hours away.

“I came up from Jacksonville, Florida to show my solidarity with the book banning as well as just the different political chaos that has been going on with DeSantis,” Princess Damali-Roberts, representative with Black Power Rising, said.
