After the St Pete city council sold out the people and voted to privatize the sidewalk in front of the Baywalk shopping mall, protesters let city officials and Baywalk know what they thought about their attempts to stomp on the First Amendment.
These BayWalk protesters look pretty tame to me. Their peaceful protest doesn't seem to justify the St. Pete City Council's decision to commandeer public property and hand it over to private interests.
I was surprised by Times Editor, Tim Nickens' shrieking that allowing peaceful protests on the public sidewalk "put a dagger into BayWalk." Glad to see Howard Troxler buck his editorial board and stand for free speech on public property today.
If protesters break the law, arrest them. If not, leave them be, and leave our public spaces in public hands.
