The Susan Smith Wing Of The Florida Democratic Party

January 5, 1999
Was the last time a Democrat sat in the governors office. The great Buddy McKay. Since then:

January 5, 1999
Florida GOP Jeb Bush
DEM OPPORTENT? -  Buddy MacKay
---
 November 7, 2006
Florida GOP Charlie Crist
DEM OPPORTENT? - Jim Davis
We could of had Rod Smith
---
January 4, 2011
Florida GOP Rick Scott
DEM OPPORTENT? - Alex Sink
---
January 8, 2014
Florida GOP Rick Scott
ExGOP OPPORTENT? - Charlie Crist
We could of had Nan Rich. Please note:  As of early June 2014, Scott had spent almost $13m since March on television adverts attacking Charlie Crist,  Although the ads resulted in a tightening of the race, this came about by decreasing Crist's favorability ratings. By contrast, Scott's favorability ratings did not increase. Scott should of been beaten. The Dems had a inferior candidate, with Nan Rich they probably would of won.

2018 DEM OPPORTENT  Gwen Graham?
Check out our choice for governor
in Seminole Heights Andrew Gillum here

Also note: On list, 3 corporate Dems and 1 ex GOP. You have tried it their way for a very long time, and look where you are. If you are tired of loosing then you have to reclaim the party. Bernie started it, you must finish it.

There are alot of groups out there that say they are progressive. But if you want to take the party back from corporate power The Susan Smith wing of the party is the place to start. With Susan Smith leading the way and talented committed progressives surrounding her.

Florida Pro-Dems, this is your time!

A response to “Is the Florida GOP cheering for Gillum?”

Early today Leslie Wimes, President and Founder of the Democratic African American Woman’s Caucus of Florida posted a blog on Sunshine State News about Establishment Democrat and candidate for Governor of Florida, Gwen Graham.  In this blog she points out that Gwen Graham has more colors than a chameleon.  As a member of the Democratic Establishment, Graham enjoys the luxury of her father’s name and fundraising rolodex, but not his politics.  Where Bob Graham was not afraid to stand up to the powers that be for what is good and true, his daughter in her time as a North Florida Congresswoman has cast many votes contradictory to the very soul of the Democratic Party.  Voting for the Keystone XL Pipeline and against protecting legal marijuana states from federal authorities are but a handful of her poor public policy decisions.  Now it would seem she is flip-flopping on popular issues like gun reform depending on who the audience is.

Yet, for all these indiscretions, which Ms. Wimes points out, I see other progressives writing blogs like, “Is the Florida GOP cheering for Gillum?” These serve no purpose but as a hit pieces towards Ms. Wimes.  Her decision to blog on Sunshine State News is her own.  And, many accuse her of being a GOP mouthpiece because she blogs on this popular conservative news site.  This could not be farther from the truth.  Leslie Wimes is a pro-black, anti-establishment Democrat who cares deeply for her community.  In every blog she has written, I see the underlying theme that the Democratic Party’s Establishment has failed the African American community time and time again.

In this, we stand in agreement.  The Democratic Party’s Establishment has failed African Americans, Latinos, and Millennials-especially women.  We see this in public policy put forward or rather never even proposed by the Establishment’s elected officers and candidates.  What we need is a Progressive revolution.

Andrew Gillum, a young black mayor from Tallahassee, whose progressive politics have been evident since he first took office in his twenties stands as Florida’s next best hope for change.  A mayor who took the NRA on in court and never blinked.  One who has never flip-flopped his positions, but rather remained true to his convictions.  This is the future of our Democratic Party and we progressives should remain united behind him.  We cannot let personal squabbles sabotage the candidacy of one of our best and brightest millennial leaders.

You may not like Leslie Wimes personally, but you have to respect her tenaciousness for her community and the progressive movement.  Many might not like that she and fellow DNC member Nikki Barnes were not fans of St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and did not support his re-election.  If you took a trip to Mid-Town, you might understand why.  Latinos and African Americans share a common future and a common past.  Until the Democratic Party’s elite address the concerns and issues facing our communities, you will find voices like Leslie, Nikki, and even myself railing against white supremacy and institutional racism within our ranks.  To call any of us GOP mouthpieces is not only asinine and short sighted, but just plain dumb.  Our revolution cannot continue if we allow Establishment Dems the opportunity to salt up the candidacy of our best hope to take back Florida from the Republicans.

Tampa Bay's Culture Of Corruption

Many of the politicians who decide how many tax dollars will go to benefit Tampa Bay’s professional sports franchises are also accepting free tickets to those teams’ games.   Tributes also include beer, wine, liquor, and a number of casual food items such as burgers and Cuban sandwiches.  Occasionally, crab cakes and sushi may be added. And access to politically-influential business leaders is always on the menu.

Appeal accepted! Help Rebekah win this race!

Early voting starts tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 13) in Florida, and despite GOP interference,
Rebekah Jones will still be on the ballot!

We need a real leader on the ballot in November, not a GOP-backed sham candidate from another district who hired a GOP lawyer to enforce DeSantis’ voter suppression bill to help GOP incumbent Matt Gaetz win re-election by stealing an election and throwing away votes.

Rebekah remains the only candidate in the race for Florida’s first congressional district to receive party and caucus endorsements, including Florida Young Democrats, Florida College Democrats, Progressive Democrats of Florida, as well as outside organiza

tions, including Teamsters, Progressive Turnout Project, and even celebrities like Mark Ruffalo.

Fighting this GOP scheme by Peggy Schiller and Ron DeSantis to shred votes in our district costs us a lot of money we had set aside for increasing voter turnout, reaching out to more voters, and increasing our lead over Matt Gaetz in the polls.

This guy, John Stemberger, President of the Florida Family Policy Council, has called on Gruters to resign as GOP Chair, saying the bill would punish Christians.

Florida GOP Already Looking For Ways To Fuck Tt Up

On November 4th, Florida voters overwhelmingly passed the biggest land and water conservation amendment in U.S. history.
 Seventy-five percent of voters passed
Amendment One
Well guess what, The Florida GOP is scamming again.
instead of fully funding the projects that these laws protect, they’re going to rewrite the laws. Did you know since Scott took office, environmental projects have taken a massive, crippling hit. For instance, funding for Florida Forever, the program that buys land to protect water supplies and habitats went from
$300 million to $29 million. here

There’s nothing Republicans hate more than losing the power to control money. Especially losing that power to voters for such an unworthy cause like the environment.

Florida GOP Frank Artiles

Florida Strong documentation:
1. Property appraiser by trade – It is asserted that the materials disseminated wrongfully assert that Mr. Artiles is a “property appraiser by trade.” However, from the documentation relied upon in describing Mr. Artiles’ occupation, it appears that he has described himself that way:
Artiles Works As A Public Adjuster & Appraiser By Trade. “Newly-elected State Representative Frank Artiles, a public adjuster, appraiser and umpire by trade, held a teleconference on November 22, 2010, with the goal of introducing himself to Florida insurance industry representatives and other interested parties and discussing their concerns, such as fraud and other issues impacting the property and casualty market.” [Colodny, Fass, Talenfeld, Karlinsky & Abate law firm, newsletter, 2010]
2. Artiles voted to raise property taxes – It is asserted that Mr. Artiles’ support of HB 7099 “has nothing to do with property taxes.” However, from the documentation relied upon in describing the impact of that legislation, that is also a true statement:
Artiles Voted For Tax Package HB 7099. On February 11, 2016, the Florida House of Representatives approved their tax package version, 96-17. Representative Frank Artiles voted Yes on this measure. [HB 7099, 2/11/16]
HEADLINE: “Sen. Tom Lee faults Gov. Rick Scott’s budget, built ‘on the backs of local taxpayers'” In February 2016, the Tampa Bay Times
reported, “You can add the influential voice of Senate Appropriations Chairman Tom Lee, R-Brandon, to the list of Republicans howling about Gov. Rick Scott’s budget — and its heavy reliance on higher property tax bills. As Lee’s committee prepares to wade through, amend and pass its first budget proposal Wednesday, Lee had choice words for Scott’s plan to increase spending for public schools by taking advantage of higher property values for homes and businesses. ‘We’re building the increase on the backs of local taxpayers and then we’re running around the state and doing a victory lap,’ Lee told the Times/Herald. ‘I’m opposed to the way we are funding public education largely on the backs of local taxpayers.'” [Tampa Bay Times, 2/3/16]
3. Artiles voted to protect insurance companies and rates have risen – It is asserted that Representative Artiles’ support of SB 1770 does not support the statements made. However, once again, the materials relied upon by Florida Strong suggest otherwise:
Artiles Vowed To Protect Insurance Companies Right After Being Elected. On a teleconference with the insurance industry in 2010, Artiles said, “I want to protect
insurance companies to make sure they do make a profit, because at the end of the day, I am a Republican.” [Colodny, Fass, Talenfeld, Karlinsky & Abate law firm, newsletter, 2010]
SB 1770 Created A Clearinghouse Intended To Help Protect Consumers. In June 2013, News Service of Florida reported, “Here are highlights of some of the bills taking effect July 1: … SB 1770: The Citizens Property Insurance Corp. overhaul, less imposing than initially proposed, still prevents coverage for new homes in high-risk, environmentally sensitive coastal areas, creates an internal inspector general position, and a clearinghouse intended to shift at least 200,000 policies into the private market.” [News Service of Florida, 6/29/13]
Tampa Bay Times: “To Say The [State-Run] Clearinghouse Has Underperformed Expectations Is An Understatement.” In January 2015, the Tampa Bay Times reported, “To say the clearinghouse has underperformed expectations is an understatement. Eleven months after its launch in January 2014, only 12,000 out of 148,000 policies run through the clearinghouse — 8 percent — were found ineligible for Citizens because a private insurer had offered coverage within 15 percent of Citizens’ rates.” [Tampa Bay Times, 1/9/15]
Said Clearinghouse Has Only Helped Private Insurers Line Their Pockets. In January 2015, the Tampa Bay Times reported, “Critics say the results show the clearinghouse is a waste of money. Private insurers are already writing more business and a separate ‘takeout’ program has been booming, with private insurers taking hundreds of thousands of policies out of Citizens.” [Tampa Bay Times, 1/9/15]
Private Insurers Now Have More Flexibility To Raise Rates On Consumers. In January 2015, the Tampa Bay Times reported, “They have more flexibility to raise rates of takeout policies. The clearinghouse option lets customers go back to Citizens during the first three years if their new company hikes premiums more than 10 percent.” [Tampa Bay Times, 1/9/15]
HEADLINE: “Homeowners insurance: Floridians pay more than double U.S. average.”In January 2015, the Tampa Bay Times reported, “In fact, Florida homeowners are now paying more than double the national average. Average insurance premiums statewide for the most common type of homeowners policy rose nearly 8 percent in 2012 to $2,084, according to data released this week from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. That makes Florida the first state to cross the $2,000 mark in average premiums and widens the gap between the next two states on the list, both of them coastal: Louisiana (average premiums of $1,742) and Texas ($1,661). The national average: $1,034. For the record, Florida’s premiums are 102 percent higher.” [Tampa Bay Times, 1/21/15]
In sum, Florida Strong stands by the statements contained in its materials as such assertions are, in fact, true.

Florida Republican's Sugar Daddy

On a Friday in February 2013, Gov. Rick Scott stepped aboard a Texas-bound plane to take part in a secret ritual for Florida’s GOP. Scott was departing for historic King Ranch, one of North America’s premier hunting grounds. The trips, records indicate, were financed all or in part with contributions from Florida’s sugar industry, right down to the hunting licenses. here

Scott won’t answer questions about his trip. After weeks of requests from the Times/Herald. The urge to keep details about the trips confidential is so strong among Florida’s elected officials that Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam’s press secretary shut a door in the face of a reporter asking about King Ranch. “You’ll have to talk to the Republican Party of Florida, since it was their fundraiser,” Putnam said as the door closed.

Florida GOP: Father-Son Duo Don Gaetz Of Niceville And Matt Gaetz of Fort Walton Beach

The Florida GOP is downright excited by two new permissive gun measures likely to pass in the upcoming legislative session. Never mind opposition from police chiefs, college presidents, campus police, professors and student organizations.seems hell-bent on adopting a campus carry bill, plus, there’s an open carry bill, which would allow Floridians with a concealed-weapons permit in Florida — all 1.4 million of them  to carry to carry their guns openly, anywhere they’re already allowed to carry concealed weapons. here and here
University of South Florida-Nielsen Sunshine State Survey last summer found 48 percent of Floridians would favor, instead, more restrictive gun laws, while only 7 percent thought Florida gun regulations were “too restrictive.” (Another 42 percent considered existing laws “about right”). An overwhelming 73 percent opposed campus carry. But lawmakers consider gun rights sacred stuff in Florida.

Let Teachers Teach—Time to Fight Back

A counterattack against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ war on truth, knowledge, and freedom stands on the launch pad with a well-known Floridian lighting the fuse.Ion Sancho, Leon County’s longtime former Supervisor of Elections, has declared that it’s time to “Let Teachers Teach” and that a Florida Constitutional amendment is the vehicle to allow that basic American right. Sancho remains active in defending democracy and is nationally recognized as an elections guru and reformer. Sporting no party affiliation, he’s a go-to talking head on news shows.

The best vehicle to obtaining the million or so signatures required to get teaching freedoms on a statewide ballot in 2024, according to Sancho: college students.“Students are already energized in the fight against far-right indoctrination,” he observed. “These activists are already protesting the governor’s attempt to marginalize women, non-whites, and the LGBT community through banning books.”The math is so simple that even neanderthal right wingers would understand it, even using their fingers and toes. There are 12 public universities and 30 private institutions of higher learning in Florida. Based on recent demonstrations against DeSantis’ war on truth, Sancho reckons each campus has between 100 and 300 vocal, high-participation activists. This does not include thousands more sympathizers who prefer a less visible role. A modest 150 average per campus totals 6,300 activists. That means these activists turned petition gatherers would need to average 159 signatures each—not a big ask. That number includes signatures above what’s called for because typically around 15 percent are tossed for technical reasons.

But Sancho doesn’t stop with student participation. He’s working the phones with the Florida Education Association and some of its chapters to get educators on board with advocating a Constitutional amendment. Parents and other private citizens would join the effort organically. Florida GOP legislators, in thrall to a corporatist, bigoted base, can’t bend over far enough to accommodate DeSantis. The threshold for a Constitutional amendment to pass as a ballot measure is 60 percent. Republican legislators, determined to marginalize democracy as well as groups that don’t align with their definition of “white Christian values,” are aiming to boost that number to 66 percent.

Sancho doesn’t see that increase as an impediment to passage of Let Teachers Teach.

“What Republicans are really scared to death of is the abortion issue,” he said.

So far, the 60 percent bar has backfired on the righties. The GOP-dominant Legislature referred three constitutional amendments to the 2022 ballot during the 2021 and 2022 state legislative sessions. All three measures were defeated. One amendment would have abolished the Florida Constitution Revision Commission and the other two related to property taxes.

The Republican-instituted proposals laughably would have passed if only a simple majority was required; they received 54, 57, and 59 percent.

At the governor’s behest, Rep. Alex Andrade (R), for the 2024 session introduced HB 999, a sweeping set of restrictions on higher education. The bill requires Florida colleges and universities to remove from its programs “any major or minor" in Critical Race Theory, Gender Studies, or Intersectionality, along with "any derivative major or minor of these belief systems."

Andrade's bill also prohibits the expenditure of funds "to promote, support, or maintain any programs or campus activities" that "espouse diversity, equity, or inclusion" or "Critical Race Theory rhetoric."

PEN America, a 101-year-old organization of writers is dedicated to protecting free expression in the United States and worldwide. It termed DeSantis’ proposal as "the most draconian and censorious restrictions on public colleges and universities in the country." FIRE, a group that defends free speech, academic freedom, and religious liberty, asserted the proposal is “laden with unconstitutional provisions hostile to freedom of expression and academic freedom."

Last week, DeSantis tilted his lance at the mythical “woke culture.” He unveiled a 2024 school board hit list featuring 14 school board members across the state who "do not protect parental rights and have failed to protect students from woke ideologies." Two of the targets are in Hillsborough: Jessica Vaughn and Nadia Combs,

Sancho served for 28 years, from 1989 to 2017. In five of those seven elections, he was unopposed.

During his time in office, Sancho was admired for his integrity as a voter advocate and elections expert, and became nationally known for his role in the Florida presidential election recount of 2000. He was also known for his appearance in the 2006 investigative documentary Hacking Democracy.
