Back the blue: Legislature declaws civilian review boards for police

The measure shields law enforcement from external complaints.

The House has agreed to Senate language on a bill that will bring an end to civilian review boards probing allegations of misconduct in Florida once Gov. Ron DeSantis signs off.

On party lines, the House voted up the Senate amended version of GOP Rep. Wyman Duggan’s measure (HB 601) which stipulates that while a Sheriff has a right to establish and appoint their own advisory board to counsel on policies and procedure, those boards have limited authority.

DeSantis and Florida GOP targeting kids with cuts to food, healthcare and work protections

“DeSantis and conservative/Trumpian/MAGA public officials” are “disassembling Florida’s social service safety net,” according to an op-ed by Barrington Salmon at the Florida Phoenix.

They are “refusing to allocate money or enough of it for school lunch programs to feed hungry children; rejecting no-strings-attached federal government dollars to expand Medicaid that would allow the state to enroll 1.4 million people; not prioritizing access to quality healthcare; continuing to siphon off money from traditional public schools to give to church-affiliated and private schools, and passing punishing draconian laws to further alienate and marginalize gay, transgender and LGBTQ children and teens,” Salmon writes.

Republican governors should end racial preferences at the state level

GOP governors like Florida’s Ron DeSantis and Alabama’s Kay Ivey have been making splashy headlines for attacking diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs and environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards at companies like BlackRock and Disney. But the laws of their own states allow racial preferences in education, employment and public contracting. Before telling private companies how to do business, governors should get their own houses in order by working with their respective legislatures to end racial preferences and ensure equal treatment for all citizens.

In Florida, DeSantis’s home state, any county, municipality, community college or district school board can legally set aside up to 10 percent or more of its budget for goods and services only for minority-owned businesses. Other companies are forbidden from even bidding on those contracts — simply because of the business owner’s race.

Trump’s battle in New York turns increasingly personal

Former President Trump’s civil trial over his business practices in New York City, where he built his business brand and won international fame, seems to have struck a nerve.

Trump, the front-runner for the GOP’s presidential nomination next year, is facing charges in Washington, D.C., for his attempts to remain in power after losing the 2020 election; in Georgia for attempting to overturn the state’s 2020 election results; in New York for an alleged hush money scheme to keep an affair quiet; and in Florida for his retention and handling of classified materials after leaving the White House.
