Syd Eastwin 2026 Award: Joe Redner

 Dear Stogie,

My own absence from the blog is more a personal reflection of stress than anything to do with this wonderful blog. Nonetheless, I have not given up on you, my vivacious readers, those of you who remain loyal followers of the Ybor City Stogie. There are, in fact, plans in the works, unseen and yet uncharted. Still, today’s content awaits…

The Syd Eastwin Award for 2026 goes posthumously to Joe Redner, a man who just died and left — like the Stogie’s founder — a massive imprint on Tampa history for the better.

The “Strip Club King” was by all accounts a man of many talents and controversies, having gained his notorious title through successful entrepreneurial enterprises that gave way to Tampa’s becoming of the “Strip Club Capital” — thus Mr. Redner attained significant popularity & power in Tampa Bay. Often times this is used for ill will, not good.

The case with Joe Redner was not to use his gains for wicked uses. He directed his wealth towards altruism, ranging from writing checks to help activists legally fight to protect the environment, all the way to bankrolling issues such as Pride liberties, medical cannabis, and so much more. From those of us who know, thank you, Mr. Redner.

I had the pleasure of meeting Joe. I did not know him all that well, however, if you have insight or respects you’d like to share, please leave a comment below. Appreciation to Kimberly DeFalco for the photo with Joe! Thank you.

Stay groovy, as Joe would have,

Asher
