(The) hearing provided a good look at the stark differences between Ken Hagan & Linda Saul-Sena, who is running against him for a countywide commission seat, as Saul-Sena spoke up from her background as a planner on behalf of the citizens, while Hagan fought for the developers who are contributing so heavily to his campaign.

 If you are forming a panel to empower minorities, should a racist get a seat at the table? Does tolerance mean tolerating bigots — who are, by definition, intolerant? And does Terry Kemple — conservative Christian activist and Hillsborough School Board candidate who speaks out against gay rights — belong on a board that's supposed to be about diversity?

Kevin Beckner, the openly gay commissioner who proposed the panel, put it this way:
 "Why would you want to serve on a board you don't believe should be in existence?"

The Hillsborough BOCC has voted 6-1 in favor of the $600m plan to raid the existing budget to further subsidize sprawl. Outgoing commissioner Kevin Beckner was the lone no vote. Virtually 100% of the spending will occur in areas where developers are building houses, but are not providing adequate infrastructure. Instead, the county is increasingly taking money from taxpayers in established neighborhoods (Tampa), and using it to subsidize new growth. here

Kevin was a trailblazer of human rights long before it was popular, serving as an openly gay county commissioner in Hillsborough, he pushed for LGBTQ rights to be part of the County's protected classes long ago. I am most interested in Kevin's priorities (priorities are noticably absent on other clerk

Equal Access to the Justice System

In partnership with the Hillsborough County Bar Association, I will establish a Self-Help Center to provide high-quality legal assistance at an affordable price. Income should not be a barrier to receiving equal access to the justice system.
I will also expand offices and community outreach in underserved and minority neighborhoods.

Fairer Justice System

The Clerk of the Court is responsible for issuing summons to appear for jury duty.

The Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees an individual the right to a trial by an impartial jury. That requires the services of a large number of qualified and diverse jurists.

Did you know the Clerk determines jury calls? I hadn't either.

While we have way further to go to an equitable (or an actual...) justice system, and it's not going to be solved within the Clerk office, it is important the right attitude is within the Clerk's office.
