Mariella Smith Affordable Housing Success

This apartment community offers affordable housing that is virtually indistinguishable from the neighboring market-rate apartments, providing nice homes with modern amenities to struggling workers whose incomes have not kept up with rising rents. The Preserve at Sabal Park offers 144 units, and the adjacent Sabal Place offers 112 units, with 70% of those for families emerging from homelessness. And thanks to an exciting first-of-its kind partnership, Blue Sky Communities provides office space to Metropolitan Ministries, which provides on-site supportive services to give formerly homeless people the tools they need to get back on their feet and achieve financial security.

Florida Hero Maggy Hurchalla RIP

"I am thinking of Maggy Hurchalla today. A hero who was sued by the same attorney who sued John Dingfelder, forcing his resignation. Maggy died a week ago and the New York Times wrote a beautiful obituary about her.

According to an earlier NYT story Ethan Loeb sued then-78-year-old environmental activist Maggy Hurchalla on behalf of an unscrupulous* billionaire who wanted to mine for limestone in the Everglades. They won a $4.4M lawsuit against her — took her kayaks and her sister’s car from her modest home on the Indian River. They offered to settle for an apology, which she refused. Maggy Hurchalla had gone from a history of environmental activism & fighting developers to become a Martin County Commissioner, but had retired by the time of this environmental fight. Her story is amazing, and inspiring."
