DeSantis, GOP lawmakers pursue efforts to weaken news media protections

DeSantis has targeted one political enemy after another, from removing a top state prosecutor in Tampa who disagreed with him on abortion rights to promoting an “anti-woke” agenda that limits the teaching of racism in public schools and diversity hiring programs at universities. He even went after business behemoth Disney when its CEO opposed an educational bill. MORE

Conservatives Are Starting To Panic Over Ron DeSantis' Authoritarian Power Grab

Local independence or State overreach?

Hello Stogie readers,

Please be on the lookout for ill tempered posturing from Tallahassee, as Governor DeSantis looks to micromanage School districts statewide. He wants to build up challengers to School Board members such as Jessica Vaughn and Nadia Combs.

If you want to keep them in office and prevent a far right ideologue from entering, please volunteer for and vote for school board members who are on the people’s side. I guarantee you that Ron DeSantis and company do not care about technical education, teacher pay, or mental healthcare. He wants to control Florida and exercise quasi authoritarian policies to shape the state into his political playground. Support your local officials over the malfeasance above them.

Before recent interest in train safety, Marco Rubio wanted DOT to loosen rail inspection rules

Before U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio demanded Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s resignation for a train derailment, he joined calls for looser regulations.

The Miami Republican was among 22 Senators who signed onto a letter requesting the Federal Railroad Administration to waive testing and allow more automation. Indeed, the October 2021 letter appears to be the last communication Rubio appears to have sent to the Department of Transportation about rail safety before a major train derailment on Feb. 3 in East Palestine, Ohio.

Ron DeSantis’s war on “woke” in Florida schools, explained

From book bans to a hostile campus takeover, here’s a rundown of DeSantis’s conservative plan for Florida education.

In 2020, Ron DeSantis’s administration declared him the “Education Governor” for how eager he was to dramatically change the state’s education system. Three years later, he’s provoked — and been engulfed in — an ongoing list of education controversies as part of his fight against “woke ideology,” or schools acknowledging or teaching about systemic injustice in American society.

As DeSantis prepares to announce his campaign for the presidency, as many have speculated, he has ramped up his involvement in Florida schools. Not only is he doubling down on existing legislation, he’s also introducing new rules and regulations — and making sure the Education Department follows through. While he largely focused on K-12 in the early years of his term, this year he has launched new plans to remake higher education.

DeSantis Rolls Out Red Carpet for Sexist Boob From Idaho

An Idaho professor who is a contender for delivering the greatest number of sexist statements in a single speech just got a big job working with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

In a 2021 talk, Scott Yenor of Boise State University said women who have careers are “medicated, meddlesome and quarrelsome.”

He said society should stop thinking of a girl “as a future worker or a future achiever, and start thinking of them as future wives and mothers.”
