The March for Rights, Respect, and Fair Food reaches Tampa!

The march completed its northward leg yesterday by reaching the city of Tampa, where the marchers were received from start to finish like conquering heroes, a reception that included a massive -- and remarkably creative -- candlelight vigil at a Publix store in Temple Terrace.

Pilgrimage to Publix

A group of Florida farmworkers and their allies will spend Labor Day bicycling as part of a journey taking them from one of the state's poorest towns to the headquarters of one of
its most profitable companies in a quest for better working conditions.
On Aug. 27, the members of the
Coalition of Immokalee Workers
set off on a 200-mile bike trek from the southwestern Florida farming community
of Immokalee to the Lakeland headquarters of Publix.

Immokalee Slave Masters Plead Guilty

Five Immokalee residents pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to charges of enslaving Mexican and Guatemalan workers, brutalizing them and forcing them to work in farm fields. The 17-count indictment in the case - one of the largest slavery prosecutions Southwest Florida has ever seen - was originally released in January.........here

Tomato Pickers Win Victory With Burger King

BKC has agreed to pay an additional net penny per pound for Florida tomatoes to increase wages for the Florida farm workers who harvest tomatoes. To encourage grower participation in this increased wage program, BKC will also fund incremental payroll taxes and administrative costs incurred by the growers as a result of their farmworkers' increased wages, or a total of 1.5 cents per pound of tomatoes...........here

Burger King Espionage In The Sunshine State

In Florida, groups organizing for tomato pickers’ rights say they might have been spied on and vilified online by the fast-food conglomerate Burger King. The Fort Myers News-Press traced threatening emails directed at the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and the Student/Farmworker Alliance to Burger King’s corporate headquarters in Miami, Florida.........here
