Florida Laborers Success Story

Don't ever think you can't make a difference!
Described as recently as 2003 by a U.S. Justice Department official as “ground zero for modern slavery,” Florida’s tomato fields are becoming an unlikely civil-rights success story. And the unempowered laborers who in 1993 formed the CIW in response to decades of violence, sexual harassment, wage ripoffs and even involuntary servitude have started a conversation that may even spread to Central America, South America, Africa and Europe. here

Publix One Penny More Per Pound Of Tomatoes

Dozens of protesters gathered outside a Publix super market on Bay Street Sunday in Sarasota to encourage the grocer to join the Fair Food Program. For five years, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers has prodded the corporation to join the program, which helps improve wages for farm workers by asking retailers to pay one penny more per pound of tomatoes. It also calls for a code of conduct to prevent wage theft, human trafficking and sexual harassment in the fields. here

Publix Refusing To Support The Fair Food Program

Florida’s tomato farms supply
50% of all U.S. fresh tomatoes
but have also been called America’s ‘ground zero for slavery.’
Countless workers held against their will, threatened with violence and forced to haul hundreds of heavy tomato buckets a day for little to no pay. Thankfully, a new solution called the Fair Food Program has been proven successful. The Fair Food Program is working to enforce a policy of zero tolerance for slavery on tomato farms........more
But a major U.S. supermarket chain,
Publix Super Markets, is refusing to support the Fair Food Program.

THERE'S SOMETHING ROTTEN AT PUBLIX

Florida’s tomato farms supply 50% of all U.S. fresh tomatoes
but have also been called America’s ‘ground zero for slavery.’
Countless workers held against their will, threatened with violence and forced to haul hundreds of heavy tomato buckets a day for little to no pay. Thankfully, a new solution called the Fair Food Program has been proven successful. The Fair Food Program is working to enforce a policy of
zero tolerance for slavery on tomato farms.
But a major U.S. supermarket chain, Publix Super Markets,
is refusing to support the Fair Food Program. Publix continues to buy tomatoes from growers that are not partners of the Fair Food Program and where workers still toil beyond the reach of its proven protection from modern slavery.
