Research Shows Poverty Is 4th Leading Cause of Death in US


Research published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association estimated that poverty was linked to at least 183,000 deaths in the United States in 2019 among people aged 15 or older, making inadequate income the nation's fourth-leading mortality driver that year behind heart disease, cancer, and smoking.....MORE

Steps Forward for the chronically homeless in Tampa

Steps Forward got its start two years ago after Tampa Tank Inc. chief executive officer Calvin Reed told then-Mayor Pam Iorio about a good homeless assistance facility he saw in Texas. In response, Iorio and County Administrator Mike Merrill organized a study group of a few local officials
and business executives.

Meet Allen
Homeless since 1998. Born in Tampa, he was living in LA but got tired of paying the gangs for protection. He now resides in the streets of Tampa. He is disable and does get a little money from the government but not enough to afford a place to live.

A 68 year old mother of 3 (ages 52 to 44). She was born in Cooperstown, NY, but now resides on the streets of Tampa. She has been homeless since 1972. She recently applied for Section 8, but was denied. She lives off the kindness of strangers.
