Protestors Want TPD Chief Brian Dugan Fired

A Tampa protest is scheduled for this Sunday the 14th in Hyde Park, but this time with one specific demand of Mayor Jane Castor.
Fire the Police Chief Brian Dugan
“We call on Mayor Castor to fire Chief Dugan for his lack of transparency surrounding less than lethal force used on peaceful protestors,” said the organizers. HERE

Tampa Getting Loud Works

"Speak up and engage your city council. Shout to all the city council members who reached out this weekend and pressed the Mayor to figure out how we get body cameras now."
 Christopher Cano

Body Cameras for TPD

In September of 2019, the City of Tampa received a federal grant of $600,000 to fund body cameras for 600 Tampa Police Department officers.

Where is the money?

Chris Cano on City GOV.

Tampa leaders vote down police body camera deal HERE
---So, we have a militarized police department, enabled by a Mayor that turned a blind eye to police corruption under her tenure as Chief, that is now issuing ultimatums to halt protests and you all didn’t think it wise to spend money on the very camera systems that hold these corrupt killers with badges accountable?
Please explain...and if you choose to not answer or untag yourself, we are all watching.
---
Update:
Appreciate all the members of the city council today who have reached out since posting this story, bill carlson, guido maniscalco, orlando gudes, luis viera. glad this vote is to be revisited. body cameras are a good first step...yet the citizenry needs real power to hold accountable its police when the justice system fails to deliver. citizen’s review boards with subpoenas and punitive power are
the logical next step.

Protesters march outside Jane Castor campaign office

Tampa’s good ‘ol boy network

Six of the seven candidates haven’t offered anything new or inspirational -- only Topher Morrison, owner of a small business and political neophyte, touts unique innovation and total inclusiveness.  Sadly, he is a long shot to make the anticipated two-person runoff despite energizing the youth vote.
The remaining aspirants are intent on perpetuating Tampa’s good ‘ol boy network that chains Tampa to third-rate status among the country’s big cities.
These candidates include a legacy candidate, two city council members with notably unremarkable records, an out-of-touch billionaire who hasn’t grasped the issues but is convinced he can buy the office, a former county commissioner with a checkered record whose rhetoric exceeds his accomplishments, and a former police chief who was castigated by the Department of Justice for racial profiling. Biking While Black In Tampa

Between Jan. 1, 2014 and Aug. 30, 2015, Tampa police documented 9,121 bicycle stops. Though black people make up about a quarter of the city's population, they accounted for 7 out of every 10 bike stops. Among those stopped, black bicyclists were more likely to get a ticket than white bicyclists.

**This disparity disappeared after the Times investigation, researchers said, when Tampa police mandated that all bike stops be documented as "street checks."** According to a report by the Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, the Tampa Police Department policy of writing tickets to black bicyclists didn't reduce crime, stop bicycle crashes, or curb bicycle theft. All it did was "burden" black bicyclists. "Though these stops were intended to reduce problems in areas with high crime rates, which were mostly black, the disproportionate citing of African-American bicyclists was unfair and, even if not intended as harassment, often perceived as such," COPS office director Ronald Davis wrote in the 72-page report. Words of Rev. Russell L. Meyer

"No former chief of police should be considered for mayor of Tampa. Why?"
"Tampa has a strong mayor form of government. That means TPD works for the mayor. Look at the budget. TPD is unquestioned. It is the mayor's enforcement corps. It has been used for political repression. The mayor can direct sting investigations and felonize political opposition. A Chief of Police has far too many " HERE
