“CAWTHORNED”: Matt Gaetz’s world is about to get a lot less comfortable


The establishment GOP — whatever that means nowadays — does still have some teeth to them. They showed it last year by getting rid of the chatty North Carolina Congressman Madison Cawthorn, whose antics and accusations became a major source of embarrassment for the party.

Now it appears that the GOP is ready to perhaps do something similar to gadfly Florida Representative Matt Gaetz — by leaking embarrassing details emerging from its ethics investigation of his behavior with under-aged girls.

With little time left to prevent a government shutdown, the House is in a familiar position: effectively paralyzed as conservatives feud with Speaker Kevin McCarthy over matters large and small.

McCarthy has pushed the Republican conference to embrace a short-term funding plan that would include a sweeping Republican proposal for the southern border. But a small group of hard-line conservatives has defied the Speaker in a quest to get rid of stopgap funding plans, known as continuing resolutions, even if opposing them means forcing a government shutdown.

'He's 100% in': Matt Gaetz widely expected to run for Florida governor

The idea that Rep. Matt Gaetz will run for Florida governor in 2026 has been the topic of several conversations in Tallahassee over the past few days, including during a reception Sunday night for the incoming speaker of the Florida House.

Gaetz has long been considered on the shortlist of those who will try to seek the Republican nomination for governor, a field that is expected to be crowded because the incumbent, Ron DeSantis, will be facing term limits.
