Mayor Buckhorn's Administration Nullified City Council's Right

"To have a say in the Morris Bridge issue. They might have objected to this water grab, but now their hands are tied. No worries - if you email the County Commission and get them to appeal this bad deal, that is."Phil Compton

Tampa Bay Buy The Damn Trains

The CSX presentation in September has fired up rail proponents, who see a gift-wrapped system that could move people from downtown Tampa through downtown Clearwater into downtown St. Petersburg, north through Pasco County as far as Brooksville in Hernando, with connections to the University of South Florida and Tampa International Airport. here

So what's the hold up?
"Without a better transportation system, tourism in the Tampa area is likely to shrink from its current record levels and the region will lose its capacity to draw businesses to the urban core, according to two groups that promote economic development." Visit Tampa Bay and the Tampa Downtown Partnership. Maybe we need Jan Platt's solution!

Bob Buckhorn Let’s Be Real Here

“Let’s be real here — the mayor did not support Charlie Crist. Everybody knows that, and that decision was made based on his political position…those in the political arena know that. He made it known that he wasn’t supporting Charlie Crist….and for a city employee, a city administrator, someone who invested that many years with the city, and that person is denied that investment by a few months. What kind of city is this?” Frank Reddick

We recommend Julie Jenkins for Tampa City Council

Here is what one of our long time favorite has to say:
After two 4-year terms on Tampa City Council, I am term limited from running this year, but I still care deeply about having an independent, forward-looking and inclusive Tampa City Council.
That's why I am letting you know who I support to take over my District 2 seat: Julie Jenkins!

"Julie shares what I believe are the most important values for a public servant and especially for a city-wide councilwoman - a commitment to listen and to respond equally to ALL citizens she serves. She has an outstanding record of community service and neighborhood activism as a volunteer, parent and neighborhood leader. Julie has the forward looking goals that will help Tampa take the steps we need to be a leader among 21st century cities.

Her varied work experience in Tampa - as marketing director in the tourism and travel industry and currently as development director for St. Peter Claver School - have given her a balanced perspective on the needs of all kinds of businesses, families and neighborhoods. She not only listens to people's concerns, she makes her own intelligent decisions and she gets things done.

I would be so pleased to see this smart, community-minded leader serve citywide on Tampa City Council!  Thanks for all of your support over the years and for considering a vote for Julie Jenkins!

Sincerely, Mary Mulhern

Raíces en Tampa To Spotlight Tampa City Council Lying

On October 16, 2014 during a Tampa City Council meeting, Raíces en Tampa attempted to have the Council vote in favor of supporting driver's licenses for the undocumented. Joined by supporters and people who would be affected by this change, Raíces en Tampa hoped the City of Tampa would be the first city in Florida to publicly support the movement for licenses. Tampa City Council refused to vote and at one point even stated they had never seen the resolution. A Raíces en Tampa member stated off the podium that each of them had indeed seen it, and reminded them that out of the seven City Council member, six of them had met with Raíces en Tampa. Mike Suarez lifted his finger to his mouth signaling the Raíces en Tampa member to silence herself and continued denying they had met with Raíces en Tampa. This is why Raíces en Tampa will hold a press conference on
November 10, 2014 starting at 6:00 PM.

Tampa City Council Making Us Look Bad

Tampa, Florida: Homeless People Thrown in Jail For...Sleeping?
Mass incarceration: the answer to all our problems. Last week, the city council passed two ordinances that ban panhandling in much of the city and allow police to arrest people for sleeping or storing their stuff in public spaces. Courts have previously ruled that public behaviors people must engage in to stay alive, like sleeping and eating, cannot be banned without ensuring the resources that provide them with alternatives, but the council did not increase funding for shelters or transitional housing at Alter NetWhat they are saying about us: The state of florida doesn't even deserve a capital letter. It's a fetid swamp. Hey Tampa, "Stupid is as stupid does.

Tampa Bay Homeless

The city is one step closer to enacting a new set of restrictions on homeless people.
Council members discussed two proposed ordinances that would add more restrictions to an existing six-day-a-week ban on roadside panhandling. The first would ban panhandling near downtown, Ybor City, banks, ATMs, sidewalk cafes and transit stops in an effort to stop people from begging in places others can't easily leave. The second would prohibit people from storing their property in public, urinating in public, and sleeping or camping in parks, on sidewalks or in public rights of way.
more
thankfully we have  Mary Mulhern who said the city must first increase its shelter offerings before passing an ordinance like this. Courts have ruled that cities must ensure there are adequate alternatives before banning behaviors — such as sleeping on sidewalks — that are closely associated with homelessness. She was the only council member to vote against both proposed ordinances.

Tampa Hotbed Of Apologists And Proponents Of The Castro Regime

It seems that Tampa has now become a hotbed for apologists and proponents of the vile Castro regime. This motley crew of elected officials and community leaders led by U.S. Representative Kathy Castor are expending large amounts of energy and money to defend and promote the lawless regime of the Castro family, which is the bloodiest dictatorship in the Western Hemisphere.".......Alberto de la Cruz

Tampa's City Council To Exploit The Cuban People

According to Alberto de la Cruz of the Uber right-wing anti-cuban blog Babalu.
Whose hatred of the cuban  revolution is so strong they rather see their countrymen suffer then to give an inch on this ridiculous outdated embargo.
"Nearly half of Tampa's City Council will be following in Castor's footsteps in May, embarking on a visit to Cuba to meet with officials of the vile and murderous Castro dictatorship so they can "learn" how to exploit opportunities on the island. As if having the Castro regime exploit them was not enough, now the Cuban people have council members from American cities seeking advice from their slave masters on how they can exploit them."
here About the trip Sue Carlton
"I think that, clearly, the approach we've taken for the last half-century has not gotten us anywhere. It's time to do something different.".....Harry Cohen
"Tampa is where the future of the relationship between the United States and Cuba will unfold. I truly believe that."..... Yvonne Yolie Capin

Good luck ladies and gentlemen. We are proud of you.

Tampa's 50-Foot Rule

No not lap dances, car stereos
Tampa City Council gave its preliminary approval to an ordinance Thursday that would make it illegal for drivers to blast their car stereos. The proposal would allow police to ticket drivers if their music can be heard from at least 50 feet away and would include possible jail time for a third offense.
more
Jail time for playing your stereo too loud? I like this idea better.
Council member Lisa Montelione cast the only vote against the ordinance. She said she supported it, but objected to incarcerating repeat offenders. "Jail time is going to put a lot of young people behind bars who are going to get records and who are not going to be able to get jobs," she said.Better, Montelione said, would be to impound the cars of the offenders. But she was alone on that. "The only way this ordinance is going to work is if the penalties attached to it are steep enough to keep people from repeatedly violating it," council member Harry Cohen said.

Tampa, Hillsborough County To Sue BP

Days before the third anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, attorneys for Hillsborough County and the city of Tampa are moving to sue oil giant BP over tens of millions of dollars in lost tax revenues. Hillsborough County commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to file suit over the county's claim that it suffered nearly $43 million in losses — from hotel, gas, sales and other tax and fee receipts — as a result of the spill.
