Hillsborough Recovery Coalition outreach fights opioid epidemic


Drug overdose deaths have decreased by 8% this year, according to State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

Lopez said that more progress will be achieved in the fight against fentanyl abuse and the abuse of other drugs since new legislation has been signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The state attorney emphasized the importance of partnerships in combating the epidemic. Hillsborough Recovery Coalition is a nonprofit organization that provides peer support for individuals and families affected by substance use.

“We get reports back that some of the Narcan that we distribute has actually reversed some overdoses.” said Hillsborough Recovery Coalition Peer Support Counselor Monica Gonzalez.

With offices located at the Portico Cafe, they offer support groups and resources such as food and clothing. However, according to Gonzalez, outreach is the most crucial aspect of their job.

DeSantis signs bill erasing the term ‘climate change’ from state law


Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation (HB 1645) on Wednesday that will erase several instances of the words “climate change” from state statutes and restructure the state’s fossil fuel-based energy policy that listed climate change as a priority when making energy policy decisions.

The priority now is to ensure “an adequate, reliable and cost-effective supply of energy for the state in a manner that promotes the health and welfare of the public and economic growth,” as spelled out in a legislative analysis.

The Sarasota County school board voted 4-1 Tuesday night to reject the federal government’s new Title IX guidelines, potentially risking funding.

Last month, the Department of Education issued the new guidance, which expands Title IX protections to transgender students, among other changes. Less than one week later, Governor Ron DeSantis said Florida would not comply with the new rules.

DeSatan warns of potential expulsion for student protesters in Florida

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is warning college students in his state that they could be expelled if they engage in unsanctioned protests on campuses.

“At places like Columbia and Yale, Hamas protesters rule the roost, and the universities are too weak and scared to do anything — even as these mobs harass Jewish students and faculty,” the governor said in a post on the social platform X. “If you try that at a Florida university, you are going to be expelled.”
