The Ybor City Chamber of Commerce is considering licensing its nationally-known Halloween event, Guavaween, to a third party for 2014. "We think it's time for the Chamber to spin-off this unique special event,"

said David Alvarez, Chair of the Ybor City Chamber. here

I wonder how the merchants on 7th Ave feel about The Chamber taking away their business on possibly the best night of the year. We urge to party on 7th and support the folks that are there all year long.

Ybor City Museums

The museum occupies the former Ferlita Bakery (originally La Joven Francesca) building at 1818 9th Avenue. The bakery was known for producing Cuban bread and its ovens are part of the museum displays covering the history of the cigar industry and the Latin community from the 1880s through the 1930s. There is also an ornamental garden in the building (available for rental after regular hours).

Tours of the gardens and the "casitas" (small homes of cigar company workers) are provided by a ranger. Exhibits, period photos and a video cover the founding of Ybor City and the cigar making industry.

Florida boasts 3 cities on list of best places to live in U.S., Ybor City near top

Three Florida cities made the Money.com list of Top 50 best places to live in the U.S., but none of Florida’s major municipalities made the cut.

Ybor City in Tampa came in second on the list of best places to live, only behind Metuchen, New Jersey. Ybor City, only a short distance from Tampa Bay, was described as “the cultural epicenter of one of America’s hottest cities.”

The Stogie Is Ten Years Old

Happy Birthday Stogie
On This Date Back In 2003 The Ybor City Stogie Was Born.
The idea for the name came to me from a movie filmed in Ybor City about a minor league baseball team naned The Tampico Stogies. It was called Long Gone and started William Petersen,Virginia Madsen and the late great Henry Gibson. I was actually there and watched some of it being filmed. And of couse Ybor City being the stogie capital of the world.  It started out as a website ( you can see what it looked like here) and it became a blog in May of 2006.

The Story Of Ybor City

Rolling by on Adamo Drive, thousands of motorists have gotten glimpses under the scaffolding of the work in progress, but a huge mural painted to tell the story of Ybor City makes its official unobstructed debut next week. Michael Parker, an adjunct instructor of art at Hillsborough Community College in Ybor City, recruited students to help paint and interviewed residents as part of his research.

The Proposed Gentrification of Ybor City by the Tampa Bay Rays

Tomorrow morning I, along with several others, will be speaking before the Hillsborough County Board of County Commission in opposition to the proposed relocation of the Tampa Bay Rays to a new stadium in Ybor City. This is the graphic I plan to put on their overhead projector and the speech I plan to give.

Come on out to the meeting if you can and support those who are fighting to preserve the Ybor City community. The commission meeting is at 9:00am on the second floor of the County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd.

What's new and what's next in the Ybor City CRA

Twenty-one brand-new archway lights span East Seventh Avenue, the main drag in the Ybor City Historic District.

The 34-foot-long aluminum arches, adorned with a “Y” medallion at their midpoint and outfitted with energy-efficient LED lighting, replace decorative archway lighting that stood along Seventh for more than three decades. The new lights are part of the Tampa Community Redevelopment Department's ongoing efforts to use property tax revenues generated within the Ybor City Community Redevelopment Area boundaries to spruce up the district through public infrastructure improvements and programs that help businesses fund facade improvements.
