Since 2021, when Florida lawmakers passed a bill targeting trans athletes, later signed into law by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Republicans in the state have gained more power.
And this year, they’ve unveiled what Equality Florida has dubbed a “slate of hate bills,” driven in no small part by DeSantis’ stated priorities, including the “protection” of children from queerness, as he prepares to (likely) run for president in 2024.

Bill restricting use of preferred pronouns at school advances

A bill is advancing that would change the rules around the use of preferred pronouns at Florida’s public schools.
Republican Sen. Clay Yarborough’s bill (SB 1320) would also ban classroom instruction related to sexual orientation or gender identity until the ninth grade. It advanced at its first committee stop along party lines in front of the Senate Committee on Pre-K-12.

Gov. Ron DeSantis is getting unwelcome air cover from a new ad in the wake of his controversial position on the Ukraine war.
The Center Street PAC rolled out a spot Friday that paints “American Ron DeSantis” as a “new Russian hero fighting imperialist American aggression in our glorious liberation of Ukraine.”
