Kelly Benjamin Tampa Folks

Tampa folks: we have an opportunity to push some of the power of the voices in the streets into public policy through the Tampa City Council and provide an avenue for the community to have a say in how they are policed through the Citizen Review Board for the Tampa Police Department. Below are instructions to comment at Thursday’s Council workshop on the Citizen Review Board changes
---
Here’s what we are asking for:
1. Rather than the mayor having the majority of appointments, neither the mayor, nor any other individual, should have the power to appoint more than one third of
the CRB’s members.
2. The CRB should have its own independent attorney that it does not share with any other city-government subdivision.
3. The CRB should have a budget for investigations and the ability to retain outside investigators or, alternatively, the CRB’s independent attorney should be able to retain outside investigators on
the CRB’s behalf.
4. The CRB should have its own administrative staff or, alternatively, a coordinator from Community Affairs should replace the coordinator designated by the Chief of Police for purposes of setting the meeting agendas and other responsibilities other than training CRB members and providing TPD updates.
5. The CRB should have control over its own agenda (rather than have it set by TOD) and decide for itself what to investigate/review, including the ability to investigate complaints received directly from the public.
6. The CRB should have discretion to review any Internal Affairs investigation where discipline is pending.
7. If the CRB requests information/documents from TPD (outside of issuance of a subpoena), TPD should be required to provide the information/documents within 30 days or request an extension of time, which the CRB should have discretion to grant or deny. TPD should only be permitted to withhold requested information/documents from the CRB if providing same would violate a law, in which case such legal basis should be provided
to the CRB in writing.
8. The CRB member participating in an interview panel for a prospective TPD officer should receive all documents/materials regarding the candidate at the same time as other interview panel participants (and in any event, at least seven days before any interview panel takes place).
9. A prospective CRB member with a criminal record and/or history of litigation against the City of Tampa should not be categorically disqualified from appointment. Rather, this information should be considered by City Council and/or the Mayor when making appointment decisions.
10. CRB membership should reflect the racial, gender, ethnic, national origin, religious, linguistic, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, and age composition of the
City of Tampa population.
We need to emphasize the importance of having subpoena power and how civilian-review boards are assets to their communities, as opposed to thorns in the side of law enforcement. If you’ve felt moved to be in the streets at all this summer, this is a concrete way to direct that energy to change.
Please sign up to comment before 9AM Wednesday! Public comment sign up is closed after that. The workshop takes place
9AM Thursday!
You got all that?!? HERE

Florida To Chill Legitimate Dissent

“This is an attempt to chill legitimate dissent and somehow equate protests against police killing Black people with criminal activity despite the clear evidence that the protests occurring in Florida are overwhelmingly peaceful,” said Kelly Benjamin, co-founder of Tampa for Justice.
---
“The governor is attaching himself to Donald Trump’s propaganda and manufacturing a non-existent law and order crisis in Florida,” said Senate Democratic Leader Audrey Gibson. “It’s political fearmongering to bolster a president’s re-election bid.” HERE

Kelly Benjamin: The Real Looters

The real looters have long been destroying our society from the safety and luxury of corporate board rooms and the halls of power in America. The anger and rage in our communities is 100% justified.
We can and must understand and empathize with that anger in this moment to organize for real positive change. The whole system has to fundamentally transform to move forward. A return to pre-pandemic business as usual is a death sentence for America.
Let this moment of riots in the midst of a pandemic in a failing system with vast inequality and millions unemployed with a complete buffoon in charge be a catalyst to move this nation in a profoundly new direction.
If we don’t seize this moment to have the hard conversations we’ve been pretending don’t need to happen, we fail our children.
Organize.

I met Joe Biden once

Summer of 2013 at the White House. Nice guy! Firm Handshake! Did not try to kiss me! He's a lot like he's portrayed on Saturday Night Live. Maybe a little handsy-er but if he were in my family, he'd still be my favorite uncle. Mostly because all my other uncles are total dicks!
(Not you Uncle Richey!)
With that said, *IF* Biden could beat Trump, he'd be a really boring President. Certainly not anything nearly as dangerous or horribly corrupt as this greedy, lecherous, amoral white nationalist fascist asshole we have now, but he'd still likely just meander through his Presidency affecting very little real change, occasionally invading people's personal space, as shit continues to get worse and worse all around him. While this may seem like a vast improvement on the face of it, that's more a reflection of how low we have sunk.
Biden doesn't have a clear understanding of the all encompassing urgency of the climate crisis. To Bernie, it's a National Emergency. To Uncle Joe, it's another talking point to butcher. Just having a warm body that believes in science in the White House may sound really refreshing but at the unprecedented rate the world is heating up, with all the dire warning signs the planet is giving us almost daily, we don't need a guy that thinks "clean coal" is still on the table and better mileage on your new Chevy is something to cheer about. Biden's climate plan scored at or near the bottom of the field by the Sunrise Movement, Greenpeace, 350, Data for Progress and the Center for Biological Diversity. I have no doubt that he'd put together a strong climate team to push far better energy policy than the total disaster we have going but how far do you think he'll go while still collecting tons of money from fossil fuel industry donors? He is not going to put a dent in the climate crisis and this is my single biggest issue with him. But there are several.
It's not a coincidence that healthcare and insurance stocks soared after Super Tuesday. Biden's approach to healthcare costs more than Bernie's and still leaves millions without real health care. Joe will make sure that there is still plenty of enormous profit to be made from people getting sick. Execs are breathing easy. With Biden, they have nothing to fear.

What about income inequality and the death of the middle class? Forget about it! Wall Street loves Joe Biden. They're breaking out their checkbooks faster than a toupee in a Florida hurricane.

But he's best pals with Obama! Yes, yes he is.

But did you know his middle name is "Robinette?"
Think about that for a minute.

Kelly Benjamin: Fuck This Shit

"It's draining but if you're not standing up right now at this moment in America, you're complicit. I might love you and still be your friend but now is not the time for greased accommodation and civic laziness. Cheers to all of those who are drawing a line, who are desperately trying to stop the descent into collapse, who are coming out of the woodwork to say fuck this shit."
