I4/275 Destruction Through Tampa

TCentral Avenue Black Business District was an area in the Central Park (South Nebraska) neighborhood in Tampa. It was a hub for over 100 black stores and restaurants such as the Cotton Club where famous performers such as Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerald came to perform. Performers, minorities, and whites all could come and experience culture, get something to eat, shop,
or find a place to stay. In fact, Ella Fitzgerald wrote her hit "A Tisket a Tasket" at the historic Jackson House on Scott Street. In the 1960s the neighborhood became almost completely non-existent with the construction of Interstate 4 and I-275 through downtown Tampa. here

New Transit Poll - No Rail

A new poll indicates a majority of Hillsborough County voters would support a half-cent-per-dollar sales tax increase for transportation improvements if a vote were held today.  The ballot question does not mention light rail — a mode of transportation that opponents focused on and that was highly unpopular among suburban voters. here

Rare Republican David Jolly

“I’m going to tell you something you rarely hear a member of Congress say: I think the climate’s changing. I think man’s had an impact, and we need to stop arguing about the science,” U.S. Rep. David Jolly said on February 27 at the University of South Florida. here

Rick Scott's Florida - America's New Tax Haven

Meet DavidTepper he is the founder of hedge fund Appaloosa Management, and he’s worth more than $10 billion, according to Forbes. He ran his firm out of New Jersey for years, but recentlymoved the operation to Miami Beach. The top income tax rate in New Jersey is nearly 9%. In Florida, the top rate is 0. Tepper will save so much money that New Jersey finance officials worry that the tax revenue lost to his move could blow a hole in the state budget.here

Connecticut lost a couple of billionaires as well— Thomas Peterffy and C. Dean Metropoulos, who also decamped for Florida recently. Rick Scott even invited Yale University to ditch New Haven and relocate to the

Welcome to Florida — where citizens who want good government have to sue for it

For the past few weeks, in a small courtroom up in Tallahassee, Florida has been on trial. It stands accused of denying children of a proper education. The plaintiffs are parents who say they're sick of underpaid teachers, punitive testing and politicians who divert public school money to for-profit companies.  Just last week, Florida finally settled another case where the state was accused of denying children proper health care. It took parents and pediatricians in that case 11 years. But they won. here
