John Siegenthaler: A Southern man of vision

When the history of this era is written,
it will recount how so-called
conservatives gave aid, comfort and intellectual cover to the ugliest of human impulses under the guise of
political debate.
People will wonder how we could have seen all that ugliness without seeing a thing, how journalists could have been silent and supine to the point of malpractice in the face of such obvious and monumental misbehavior. here

Give Gov. Rick Scott Credit

He knows right-wing, red-blooded Floridians love their guns. And Rick Scott has given them guns. In huge numbers. According to published reports, more pro-gun bills have been signed into law in Florida during Scott’s one term than during any other recent gubernatorial term. here

Jeb: Godfather of bogus high-stakes testing

Former Gov. Bush enjoys a national reputation as an education reformer — a neat trick considering the terrible harm he has inflicted on public education.
Although the Legislature and succeeding Republican governors share responsibility, Jeb is mostly to blame for the bad things that followed his 1999 arrival in office. here

"I don't want to be the mayor of some white-bread Southern city,"

Tampa has historically always been a racially diverse city, and never more so than today. Latinos make up approximately 25 percent of the population in greater Hillsborough County, and blacks account for more than 15 percent.

"When we're out competing for global business, the fact that our city was settled by Spanish, Cuban and Italian immigrants who came to Tampa for the cigar industry, makes us a lot more competitive because we look like the world, with all of its shades and ethnicities, we speak multiple languages as you do here in L.A. That's good." Bob Buckhorn

The stain on Hillsborough County's reputation

A majority of the commissioners — four of the seven — have expressed to the
Tampa Bay Times their qualified support for expanding Hillsborough's human rights ordinance to also ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in hiring, housing and public accommodations. here

Democrat Les Miller and Republicans Victor Crist and Sandy Murman told the Times they support barring discrimination against gay and transgender people, but would need to see the actual ordinance in writing first. Commissioners Al Higginbotham and
Mark (Sailors Haven) Sharpe, both Republicans, wouldn't weigh in before Wednesday.

One local conservative activist has started mounting an effort to defeat the ordinance. Terry Kemple, a Hillsborough School Board candidate, called the offices of several commissioners Monday to express his concerns. "It's bad policy, and this is a huge issue," Kemple said in a phone interview. "This puts government in the position of trampling on people's religious liberties in favor of people's sexual preferences."

Florida GOP: Tony Ledbetter, abysmal failure and stinkin' hypocrite

Tony Ledbetter has proven himself to be an abysmal failure since taking the reigns of the Republican Party of Volusia County from Stan Escudero following the 2012 elections. Ledbetter's also proven himself to be divisive, polarizing and downright mean-spirited and even bigoted. He's alienated members of the media, the voting public and even people in his own party.

Jeb's legacy is taking a huge hit

One of Bush's finest moments came in 2002, when he and President George W. Bush pledged a 50-50 state-federal partnership to clean up the Everglades. Gov. Bush did secure state funding. Federal funding, however, lagged. Republican deficit hawks played a part in that. And Gov. Bush significantly undermined his own work when he agreed to delay clean-water standards for a decade. here

The Sun Sentinel reported last week, oil companies are taking advantage of Florida's chronically lax environmental laws to begin a form of fracking — fracturing of underground rock to release oil — in sensitive areas close to the Everglades. Republicans who dominated the Legislature since Jeb's tenure have failed to approve rules to protect the Everglades from fracking

Ban Fracking In Florida

Recently, the Dan A. Hughes Co. of Texas was given a minor slap on the wrist by Gov. Scott's Department of Environmental Protection for secretly and illegally fracking on endangered Florida panther habitat in the heart of the western Everglades.
