GOP In Manatee County

The GOP controlled Board Of County Commissioners in Manatee County

Voted Tuesday to eliminate a third of all voting locations. The commissioners voted 6 to 1 to accept the elimination of voting locations despite the fact that it would do away with half the voting places available for minority voters. Naturally the only person who complained was the Democrat who also happens to represent District 2,
a mostly minority district......more

Florida #1 Anti Women Destination

women change their vacation plans
Tourism is one of the biggest industries in so many of the states pushing attacks on reproductive health. Florida, Texas, South Carolina, Arizona, Michigan—all of them depend on tourism dollars, and all of them are on the front lines of the war on women.
Take Florida for example. For the last 3 years, Florida has been on the front lines in the War on Women. Mandatory ultrasounds. Budget cuts to rape crisis centers. Banning insurance coverage for abortion care. The list goes on.
No politician wants to put one of their state's key industries at risk.
Can you chip in to get this project off the ground?

Scott and Bondi: Florida's Culture Of Corruption

The state of Florida has joined a lawsuit aimed at blocking a massive cleanup plan for Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay.  And, no, you can’t make this stuff up.
Last week, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi filed a brief — paid for with your taxes — attacking the legality of the Chesapeake Bay Clean Water Blueprint.
Why would the state of Florida try to obstruct the cleanup of public waters hundreds of miles away from our own?
Because Bondi and Gov. Rick Scott are complete tools.
They aren’t suing on behalf of the citizens of Florida; they’re suing on behalf of big agricultural and development interests that don’t want the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency enforcing clean-water laws anywhere......more

Florida Legend Buddy MacKay Endorses Nan Rich

Sen. Nan Rich brought her dark-horse campaign for governor to the University of Tampa on Tuesday, trumpeting the endorsement of former lieutenant governor and congressman Buddy MacKay, a Democratic elder statesman.....more>

Mr. MacKay, now retired in Marion County, was a state legislator, U.S. House member, lieutenant governor under the late Gov. Lawton Chiles, and briefly governor after Chiles’ 1998 death. He lost the 1998 governor’s race to Jeb Bush. He’s one of the last remaining members of the group of progressive Democrats, including Chiles, Reubin Askew and Bob Graham, who dominated
Florida politics during the 1970s and 1980s.

Bad News For Florida's Right Wing

Medical marijuana will be on the ballot in November,
which is bad news for Gov. Rick Scott and other Republican leaders
who oppose any relaxation of the state’s backward cannabis laws. public surveys continue to show landslide support for medical marijuana, and a majority favoring the decriminalization of small amounts for personal use. This is a thorny problem for conservative Republicans like Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi, who are up for re-election. They now have to sally forth and crusade against a popular cause, trying to stir fear and doubts among a constituency
that’s heard it all before........more>

Hillsborough Democrats Near Surrender

Just one Democrat remains in the running with four Hillsborough County Commission seats up for election now that candidate Mary Mulhern, a Tampa city council member, has withdrawn from the District 7 race for health reasons. To some observers, this scenario raises serious questions about the Democratic Party’s ability to compete in local elections.
Democrats have 61,000 more registered voters in the county than Republicans, yet the GOP has a solid 5-2 majority on the commission.....more>
“It starts with leaders recruiting candidates to run for office. There’s a lack of focus on the recruitment process at the state level. Their focus seems to be on getting people elected to Congress or statewide office.”  Kevin Beckner
