For the past few weeks, in a small courtroom up in Tallahassee, Florida has been on trial. It stands accused of denying children of a proper education. The plaintiffs are parents who say they're sick of underpaid teachers, punitive testing and politicians who divert public school money to for-profit companies. Just last week, Florida finally settled another case where the state was accused of denying children proper health care. It took parents and pediatricians in that case 11 years. But they won.here

Republican-controlled Broward Health paid two law firms with strong ties to Republican Gov. Rick Scott more than $3 million in legal fees in the last 12 months. The law firms are Foley & Lardner, which billed $1.72 million, and Greenberg Traurig, whose invoices totaled $1.65 million.here

Foley & Lardner has been generous to the Republican Party of Florida, giving it more than $195,000 during the last two gubernatorial campaigns won by Scott. Greenberg Traurig was similarly helpful to the state GOP. Since 2010, it donated more than $192,000 to the Republican Party of Florida.

A measure that opponents say is intentionally confusing and will stifle solar growth was given the go-ahead by the Florida Supreme Court. It will appear on the Florida ballot in November. The measure was proposed by a group called Consumers for Smart Solar, which has already spent nearly half a million dollars just getting the it on the ballot.here
