Zika Kicking Rick Scott's Ass

Fighting the Zika virus has become a top priority for Gov. Rick Scott, but the state’s refusal to expand Medicaid coupled with his record of cutting money for county health departments, health clinics and programs for special-needs Floridians has started to complicate his message that the federal government is failing the state in addressing the potential crisis. here

Trump Supporter Carlos Beruff's View

Developer and U.S. Senate candidate Carlos Beruff wants to open a wetlands mitigation bank unlike any other in Florida. He wants to cut back 40 acres of native mangroves now growing on the property. Why? "For the obvious reason," he told the Tampa Bay Times in July.
"The view!" here

ACTION ALERT: The deadline to comment on the mitigation bank to the Army Corp of Engineers in August 13. Sierra Club has been fighting this development and needs your help. It is critical to let the Corps know it should not approve and request a public hearing before proceeding.

A Looming Disaster In Florida

Florida is the first state to have confirmed cases of locally acquired Zika—meaning the mosquitoes that carry it are now in the state. That's enough for the CDC to issue a travel warning advising pregnant women to avoid the area of Miami where the mosquitoes have been found. So women who are pregnant or who might be pregnant are advised not to go there, but the women who live there are stuck. And The Florida GOP is more concerned with shutting down the clinics that provide what health care they do get than preventing this looming crisis. here

“They have the congresswoman from Tampa who is the lead sponsor of a bill to lift the embargo, they have the congresswoman from Tampa who reinstated the bipartisan Cuban working group meant to advance U.S.-Cuban relations.” Kathy Castor
