New service center for homeless veterans opens in Tampa
There is a new resource for veterans in our area. On Friday afternoon, 10 Tampa Bay got an exclusive look inside the new St. Michael's Homeless Veteran Outreach Center in Tampa at 8145 N Nebraska Avenue.
The center strives to provide a safe and welcoming environment for homeless veterans and their families. Its goal is to help them get back on their feet by providing the necessary resources and support. Those services include temporary housing, meals, counseling, job training, and medical care.

Judge refuses to block Florida’s law making it more difficult for transgender individuals to access medical treatments
Pointing to a recent appellate-court ruling in an Alabama case, a federal judge on Monday issued an order refusing to block a new Florida law making it more difficult for transgender adults to access hormone therapy and surgeries.
U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle issued the order after indicating during a Sept. 1 hearing that he would not issue a preliminary injunction against the law, passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature this spring and championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Citizens Customers Could See Double-Digit Hikes In Florida
The state’s Citizens Property Insurance Corp. has revised proposed rate increases, with many homeowners likely to see double-digit hikes starting late this year.
Citizens last week sent a proposal to the state Office of Insurance Regulation that would lead to an average 11.5 percent increase for homeowners with the most-common type of policies, known as “multi-peril” policies, according to information slated to be presented to the Citizens Board of Governors on Sept. 27.

UNACCEPTABLE: Child poverty rates more than doubled in 2022
The U.S. Census Bureau found that the rate of child poverty has exploded across the country from 5.2 percent in 2021 to more than double that 12.4 percent in 2022.
According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, there are currently 753,000 children in Florida living in poverty, nearly 20 percent of all children in the state.
