Transgender and nonbinary people sue Florida over its “discriminatory” bathroom law

A group of transgender and nonbinary people on Friday filed a federal lawsuit challenging a new Florida law requiring people to use public restrooms that align with their sex assigned at birth, asking a judge to block enforcement before an upcoming march in Orlando.

The lawsuit, filed in the federal Middle District of Florida, alleged that the restroom restrictions are discriminatory and violate free-speech rights.

Matt Gaetz and far right feuded with Kevin McCarthy for weeks. Here’s how it’s spiraling into a shutdown.

With little time left to prevent a government shutdown, the House is in a familiar position: effectively paralyzed as conservatives feud with Speaker Kevin McCarthy over matters large and small.

McCarthy has pushed the Republican conference to embrace a short-term funding plan that would include a sweeping Republican proposal for the southern border. But a small group of hard-line conservatives has defied the Speaker in a quest to get rid of stopgap funding plans, known as continuing resolutions, even if opposing them means forcing a government shutdown.

Essay: Why Ron DeSantis went limp as Georgia-Pacific ruined a small Florida town

He launched a legislative blitz against Disney when it dared to weigh in on a law aiming to stamp out talk of LGBTQ issues in schools. He demanded the state try to sue Bud Light’s parent company after the beer brand involved a transgender actress in a marketing campaign. He dedicated the bulk of a Legislative Session to his war against “Big Tech” companies.

But when — in an audacious display of greed — Georgia-Pacific threatens the existence of the rural town of Perry, all that known-corporate-assailant Gov. Ron DeSantis can muster is a feeble request for severance benefits in a barebones statement devoid of criticism of the paper giant.

Senate votes to advance short-term funding bill to avoid government shutdown

The Senate voted Tuesday to advance a short-term funding measure to avoid a government shutdown at the end of the week.

The vote was 72-18 at 6:23 p.m., with some senators still arriving to vote. That is more than enough for the motion to pass, as 60 votes were needed to move forward.

The vote puts the Senate on a path to pass a continuing resolution (CR) later this week that it could then send to the House to avoid a shutdown on Oct. 1.
