Jeff Brandes The Duke Of Pinellas

Money from Duke Energy, Big Sugar, for-profit private charter school companies, and countless other corporations, Brandes’ voting record has resulted in less money for our public schools, fewer rights for women, the only vote against Medicaid expansion, reckless gun legislation, and a rubber stamp for Duke’s gouging practices.

Please VOTE for Judithanne McLauchlan for State Senate.

Jeff Brandes Is Running Scared

This week my opponent launched a personal attack on my past. I want you to hear the truth directly from me.

Ever since I entered this race, I have explained that I want to go to Tallahassee so that I can fight for middle-class families. I explained that as a working mom, I know what it is like to try to make ends meet and to raise your family. I explained that I have struggled to pay my bills and for health care.
The story of how it came to be that nearly two decades ago I had to file for bankruptcy is one that says a lot about

who I am and what my priorities will be in the Florida Senate.
As a full-time student in the 1990s I was the proverbial “starving graduate student” – trying to get by on a modest stipend.  Making ends meet in those years was tough.  These financial difficulties were exacerbated by the high cost of health care insurance.

During this time, I was experiencing significant health issues.  The health insurance I needed to cover the costs of my tests and treatment was too expensive for me to afford — almost as much as my monthly rent. So for several years I took on debt to pay for the insurance. Without the insurance my medical bills could have skyrocketed, and I was terrified of losing the insurance and later being denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition.

After the surgery, my health was better than it had been in years, and I got a job with benefits. Yet, even with my increasing salary, the debt from years of living on the margins was too much. Ultimately, I filed for bankruptcy 16 years ago.

Today, I am healthy, and my family has no debts, except for the mortgage on our home in Pinellas County. I am happy to say my daughter Peggy was born in 2005, and I had no complications, thanks to the amazing medical care I received in
St. Petersburg.

The medical problems and financial problems I experienced as a young woman in the 1990s taught me a lot and have given me a passion to fight for everyone’s ability to access higher education and affordable health care.
For the millions of Americans who struggle just to make ends meet, the high cost of health care can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.  In fact, medical bills are the number one reason cited by Americans when they file for bankruptcy.  According to the US Census, 20% of Floridians have no health insurance, the 3rd worst rate in the country. We must do more to ensure Floridians have access to care. Now you know why I am so passionate about accepting the Medicaid expansion funding.

There are those who would prefer we go back to the days when insurance companies made all of our health care decisions, denying those with pre-existing conditions from receiving coverage, charging women more than men strictly based on gender, or capping the amount of coverage you can receive.
I’d prefer we keep moving forward, looking for solutions to improve the system, and ensuring that no one has to worry about losing it all due to illness or injury.

I am running for Florida Senate because right now, middle-class families across Tampa Bay are struggling. And instead of making it easier, Tallahassee is making it harder for families to make ends meet, to find good jobs, and our kids aren’t getting the education they deserve. Tampa Bay deserves a Senator who will get up and go to work every day to support middle-class families who are still struggling to recover from the recession.  And, with your help, that is exactly what I will do.
Thank you for your continued support, Judithanne

Florida's Zombie Apocalypse Bill

The Tampa Bay Times has called it
“the bring your gun to the riot bill.”
The Miami Herald
called this bill “crazy” and says this bill is the “Zombie Apocalypse bill comes to life.”
Jeff Brandes, is sponsoring a bill that would allow gun owners to carry a concealed weapon during a civil emergency, riots, hurricanes, floods and of course zombie apocalypses, whether they have a permit or not.  As Tom Germond from Tampa Bay Newspapers asks, “Who came up with this idea? Yosemite Sam?”

Florida's Backdoor Tax Increases

Sen. Jeff Brandes filed SB 144 to repeal Florida’s red light traffic laws.
We have had red light cameras in Florida for over three years. They were initially sold as safety devices, but I have come to firmly believe that they are now being used as backdoor tax increases,” stated Brandes. “We have seen municipalities that have installed these devices shorten yellow light times and set arbitrary standards on right turn on red violations. I believe cities will continue to install these devices if left unchecked.”
Earlier this year, WTSP Channel 10 reporter Noah Pransky reported that the state had quietly reduced the minimum number of seconds for yellow light intervals — specifically for those that were equipped with red light cameras. The result? Citation rates spiked by almost 40 percent in municipalities that have the cameras......more>

Local Views: Joe McColloch

Attack on public education
The narrow failure of the "parent trigger" bill in the state Senate should put all concerned parents and taxpayers in Florida on notice that the Republican ideologues who dominate the Legislature will stop at nothing to dismantle our system of public education and hand it over to special interests, most of whom help to bankroll these same legislative lackeys as well as their GOP apparatus.
With virtually no public support whatsoever, the House GOP fell all over themselves to embrace this blatant theft of taxpayer-funded assets while employing shamelessly fraudulent means — including a joke of a petition containing a mere handful of signatures, many of which were apparently bogus — to make their case that there was any public support for this hijack of our public education system. Only the courage of a few Republicans in the Senate kept this idiotic and dishonest effort from happening.
The shameful legacy of Jeb Bush, with his grandiose schemes to privatize as many of our state governmental functions as possible — and education most particularly — continues to afflict Florida and its taxpayers, much to our collective detriment.

'Parent Trigger' Bill Dies On Tie Vote

The chief advocate, former Gov. Jeb Bush, told reporters as late as February that he was confident the trigger would become law.
Even though the bill was not the supported by the Florida Education Association and most Florida parent organizations, such as the Florida PTA. These bay area men still voted for it. Please remember them next time you go to the polls.

There Are Principled Conservatives In Tallahassee

Sen. Jeff Brandes:  bill, SB 864
When a Florida sheriff sternly accuses state legislators of protecting drug dealers and child pornographers, it has a way of getting people's attention. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri made that assertion in fighting a bill filed by Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, dealing with police access to information stored on citizens' portable electronic devices such as cellphones and iPads. Brandes, citing the importance of a constitutional right to privacy, wants to change state law to require police to obtain a warrant from a judge before searching cell phone contents.

"Why in the world would a police officer need to search your cellphone if you're driving on a suspended license?"....Jeff Brandes
"Thank God there are principled conservatives in Tallahassee."....ACLU's Howard Simon
"We think it's another check on the power of the police, and it simply means that they first have to persuade a judge that there's a basis for a search.. Without this rule, it leaves the privacy of people in the hands of a patrolman."....Tim Lynch, Cato's criminal justice unit
Opponents include liberal Democrat Rep. Irv Slosberg of Boca Raton
Great job Mr. Brandes

Florida Republican Rejects Medicaid Expansion

A Florida Senate committee voted Monday against Medicaid expansion, joining the House in rejecting Gov. Rick Scott's proposal for a three-year trial covered entirely by federal funding. The Senate select committee on the Affordable Care Act voted along party lines, 7-4. Democrats said they were willing to explore alternatives but unsuccessfully pleaded with colleagues to embrace expansion as a backup.

Yet they are very good at doing this. Governor Rick Scott has spent the past two years slashing services for the middle class, such as education cuts that led to massive teacher layoffs, while dishing out millions of dollars to major corporations. Now he plans to go even further by pushing through a bill this legislative session that will give big corporations another $141 million in tax breaks.

Free The Vote, Awake The State Rally

Voting should be fair and accessible for all. But ask 102-year-old Desiline Victor, who waited three hours to vote at her precinct in North Miami if Florida’s elections are fair and accessible. She’ll likely tell you “no.” It’s time to eliminate the unnecessary barriers imposed by Gov. Rick Scott and his legislative allies that prevented an estimated 201,000 Floridians from casting a ballot in 20121. Enough already. Ms. Victor joined First Lady Michelle Obama at last night’s State of the Union address to lend her voice to the call to fix Florida’s broken elections. Will you join us at a rally on March 5th during Gov. Scott’s State of the State address to lend your voice to this rising chorus?
Sign up for a Free The Vote, Awake The State rally near you today, or organize one in your community.
