The Ybor City Stogie For Best Local Blog

2011 Florida Netroots Awards Run-off Voting Now Open

"I vote for the The Ybor City Stogie. The Stogie is not the most complicated, in-depth site, but it is unabashedly progressive and it is wonderfully local. The Stogie’s ongoing series’ ‘Tampa Bay Homeless‘ has, with its haunting minimalism, developed into the most thought-provoking ongoing series published on Florida’s blogosphere.".......Peter Schorsch

"I nominated the Ybor City Stogie for the Progressive Courage Award. Look at that description again:
Florida politician or political activist who has been a leader on a particular progressive issue in the last year, making a difference in the lives of Floridians.
I nominated him for the amazing work he continues to do highlighting the issue of homelessness in the Tampa Bay area. He does this by keeping what amounts to a running photo journal of homeless people, up close and personal, right there on his blog. When you see these folks face to face, it's really breathtaking. And it is exactly the kind of work progressives should be doing.
And in a number of ways, it is courageous. Thus my nomination. I hope you'll look at the work from the Ybor City Stogie, and I urge you to vote for him."......
Benjamin Kirby

"Run-offs are taking place this week. Go vote for Stogie for Best Local Blog."...... Re/Creating Tampa

Thanks to everyone who got me this far.

Ybor City Homeless Torture

Tampa has a new idea to deal with our homeless in Ybor. Play loud music at Centennial Park. I was told they consider it torture.  Imagine having to listen to Macarena everyday.

But if you like to dance, free music everyday
 7 AM to 10 PM.

Cleaning up Ybor City

After feeding the homeless in Ybor City, we found a corner that was filthy with trash. We went the day after and made sure to clean it the best we could and bring awareness to the locals on the impact of littering. We had a great time even with the rain. If you would like to be part of something like this next time

Kind Words From Peter Schorsch

A Brief Tribute To The Ybor City Stogie
All of the rich-and-powerful who read this site, all of the political players who I hope read my work, all of the Masters-of-the-Universe at the Governor’s Club lounge or the Tampa Club…far too few of them read, much less agree with, the writings of the Ybor City Stogie – a rudimentary cut-and-paste of Florida and Tampa Bay’s right-wing.

But I read you Stogie. And so did many others. They may not walk the corridors of power (maybe they do) but you’re readers are out there. Your features on the homeless, on the downtrodden, on the discriminated are, on one hand, heartbreaking; on the other hand, they are inspiring.

Stogie, you’ve got balls. You recently, oh-so-subtlety called out some of our fellow bloggers, asking where the hell is everybody. And for that alone, you have my respect.

In your eyes, Stogie, I must seem like a sell-out because I don’t fight for every left-wing or Democratic candidate. In fact, there are quite a few Republicans I support, respect and admire. But that’s me — working from the inside out. You keep doing what you are doing — reminding all of us what we should be saying and thinking.

Tampa Bay Homeless

The city is one step closer to enacting a new set of restrictions on homeless people.
Council members discussed two proposed ordinances that would add more restrictions to an existing six-day-a-week ban on roadside panhandling. The first would ban panhandling near downtown, Ybor City, banks, ATMs, sidewalk cafes and transit stops in an effort to stop people from begging in places others can't easily leave. The second would prohibit people from storing their property in public, urinating in public, and sleeping or camping in parks, on sidewalks or in public rights of way.
more
thankfully we have  Mary Mulhern who said the city must first increase its shelter offerings before passing an ordinance like this. Courts have ruled that cities must ensure there are adequate alternatives before banning behaviors — such as sleeping on sidewalks — that are closely associated with homelessness. She was the only council member to vote against both proposed ordinances.
