The Idea World: Tristan Da Cunha
2,567 Miles from Buenos Aires
2,090 from Cape Town
In 1877 William Glass established a settlement based on equality. All Tristan families are farmers, owning their own stock and/or fishing. All land is communally owned. All households have plots of land at The Patches on which they grow potatoes. Livestock numbers are strictly controlled to conserve pasture and to prevent better-off families from accumulating wealth. Unless the community votes for a change in its law, no outsiders are allowed to buy land or settle on Tristan; theoretically the whole island would have to be put up for sale. her

Florida GOP Marco Rubio Could Cost Florida 78,000 Jobs, $8 Billion From State Economy
Florida GOP Marco Rubio seems likely to vote for the Senate's Obamacare replacement that effectively puts poor people through a meat grinder and turns them into Soylent. Both the Senate and House plans sharply cut Medicaid funding for the poor while giving rich people massive tax cuts, and are among the least popular bills in American history, according to recent polls. here

Florida GOP Marco Rubio Will Never Ever Support Government-Run Health Care
Rubio logged onto Twitter to tell his constituents that he'll never, ever support "government-run" health care, a stance that should surprise nobody in light of the fact that Rubio has taken more than $2.5 million in combined donations from health care, pharmaceutical, and insurance companies since he first ran for Senate in 2010, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Nothing motivates quite like a few million bucks. here

Rick Scott’s Power Grab
Rick Scott wants to appoint three new Florida Supreme Court justices literally on his way out of office.
----------
A decade ago, justices issued an advisory opinion saying a governor shouldn’t make such appointments while walking out the door.
----------
Voters have overwhelmingly said the same thing. In 2014, a solid majority rejected a Republican-sponsored ballot initiative that would have given outgoing governors the power to appoint “prospective vacancies” to the Supreme Court or district courts of appeal.
