Mayor Buckhorn's Administration Nullified City Council's Right

"To have a say in the Morris Bridge issue. They might have objected to this water grab, but now their hands are tied. No worries - if you email the County Commission and get them to appeal this bad deal, that is."Phil Compton

Florida Corporate Service Commission At Work

Commissioners agreed a $1.3 billion, natural gas-fired power plant proposed in rural Okeechobee County by Florida Power & Light — is needed to meet the demands of the state’s growing population.
The decision by the Florida Public Service Commission came after objections from a pair of environmental groups, the state Office of Public Counsel and the Florida Industrial Power Users Group. The Office of Public Counsel represents consumers in utility issues, while the Florida Industrial Power Users Group represents large electricity users.
Opponents questioned the need for the plant and argued it will hinder conservation efforts and slow the growth of renewable
energy sources such as solar.
Julie Brown, who formally began a two-year term as chair of the commission Tuesday, said the plant is the
“most cost effective option”
to bring more power to the state. here

No Welcome For Bigoted Pastor Jamal Bryant In St. Petersburg

He has called homosexuality a sin that's on par with drug addiction and gambling. He has criticized those in his church who accept homosexuality as "cowards" and called President Barack Obama's support for gay marriage an example of political expediency. "I'm scared of all these civil rights leaders and all these preachers kissing up to the president just because he's black," Bryant said in the 2012 video. "He's black and wrong. He's black and out of order." here
----------
He was invited to be the keynote speaker at the 30th annual MLK Leadership Awards Breakfast by Angela Rouson, wife of State Rep. Darryl Rouson. He said he thought the event could be used as an opportunity for Bryant to change his views on gay marriage.

Florida GOP On President Obama’s Actions On Gun Sales

Jeb Bush: "When I am president of the United States, I will repeal Obama’s anti-gun executive orders on Day One of my administration."
Marco Rubio: “It undermines the Second Amendment and it will do nothing to keep people safe."
Dennis Ross: "The President is employing false rhetoric about loopholes in our gun laws to stoke fear and as a means to placate
his political base."
Todd Wilcox: “The idea that disarming law-abiding citizens will make us a safer nation is a lie that liberals continue to tell."
Carlos Lopez-Cantera: "President Obama and his Washington cronies will do anything to advance their own political agenda and restrict our 2nd Amendment rights."
----------
His efforts only nibble around the edges of the problem and pose no threat to Second Amendment rights to bear arms. . The best approach would be for Congress to act, but it refuses to stand up to the gun rights lobby even with overwhelming public support for sensible reforms.

Florida GOP: Father-Son Duo Don Gaetz Of Niceville And Matt Gaetz of Fort Walton Beach

The Florida GOP is downright excited by two new permissive gun measures likely to pass in the upcoming legislative session. Never mind opposition from police chiefs, college presidents, campus police, professors and student organizations.seems hell-bent on adopting a campus carry bill, plus, there’s an open carry bill, which would allow Floridians with a concealed-weapons permit in Florida — all 1.4 million of them  to carry to carry their guns openly, anywhere they’re already allowed to carry concealed weapons. here and here
University of South Florida-Nielsen Sunshine State Survey last summer found 48 percent of Floridians would favor, instead, more restrictive gun laws, while only 7 percent thought Florida gun regulations were “too restrictive.” (Another 42 percent considered existing laws “about right”). An overwhelming 73 percent opposed campus carry. But lawmakers consider gun rights sacred stuff in Florida.

Faith Olivia Babis: How people should respond to open-carry gun-rights activists

We should all leave. Immediately!
Leave the food on the table in the restaurant.
Leave the groceries in the cart, in the aisle.
Stop talking or engaging in the exchange. Just leave,  unceremoniously,

and fast.

But here is the key part: don’t pay.
Stopping to pay in the presence of a person with a gun means risking your and your loved ones’ lives; money shouldn’t trump this. It doesn’t matter if you ate the meal. It doesn’t matter if you’ve just received food from the deli counter that can’t be resold. It doesn’t matter if you just got a haircut. Leave. If the business loses money, so be it. They can make the activists pay. here

Alan Grayson: Justice For Andrew Joseph III

In February of 2014, 14-year-old Andrew Joseph III from Riverview was killed as he tired to cross Interstate 4 on foot after he was ejected from the Florida State Fair
 in Tampa.
Alan Grayson met with Andrew’s parents  in Tampa and said he would pursue the Justice Department to investigate the tragic loss of life. On Thursday, Grayson followed up on his promise, penning a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch calling for both
a Justice and FBI investigation. here
----------
Grayson notes that this is the same Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office that provided security for the 2012 Republican National Convention and the 2009 Super Bowl. “It seems unfortunate that the same force could not provide adequate security for ‘Student Day. “I’m going to be honest with you – the idea of taking a 14-year-old boy, dropping him off out of a car from where he was, with no practical way to get back in touch with people, to get to any place of safety, seems like inappropriate conduct,” Grayson told reporters inside the Bricks of Ybor.

Tampa Bay Buy The Damn Trains

The CSX presentation in September has fired up rail proponents, who see a gift-wrapped system that could move people from downtown Tampa through downtown Clearwater into downtown St. Petersburg, north through Pasco County as far as Brooksville in Hernando, with connections to the University of South Florida and Tampa International Airport. here

So what's the hold up?
"Without a better transportation system, tourism in the Tampa area is likely to shrink from its current record levels and the region will lose its capacity to draw businesses to the urban core, according to two groups that promote economic development." Visit Tampa Bay and the Tampa Downtown Partnership. Maybe we need Jan Platt's solution!
