Bill Person On The School Board Race

Come Tuesday, November 3rd General Election Day, voters in Hillsborough County have a major opportunity to save public education, as we know it, for decades to come. In early 2020, our current school board appointed a new leader, Superintendent Addison Davis, just prior to a district shutdown due to COVID 19. This leader has restructured the entire district, from instructional delivery, to support personnel and now he is implementing across the board unit cuts, including financial paring and key personnel adjustments to affect a leaner, more efficient school district. Now is a great time to change membership on our often dysfunctional and seemingly inept school board. Let's take a critical look at the four races in districts 1,3 5 and at-large 7.

District 3: Pro-privatization and supporter of for-profit managed charter schools, Incumbent Cindy Stuart, has resigned her seat to become the newly elected Clerk of the Circuit Court. The two winners in the primary are Jessica Vaughn, an educator and businessman Mitch Thrower. These two are polar opposites. Vaughn is a real people person with a  strong progressive stance toward improving public education for ALL students and instructional staff. She is opposed to vouchers, for-profit managed charter schools and privatization of public education.Thrower is supported by the private sector, which includes big bucks from the corporate world of for-profit charter schools, vouchers and privatization. He is funded by private sector friends and helpers in Tallahassee and developers and the like in our county. Thrower is another version of District 1 incumbent,Steve Cona III.

District 1 incumbent is a businessman, anti-union board member, promoter of for-profit managed charter schools, vouchers and Steve Cona, along with Stuart pressed hard in the past to privatize nearly 1500 district school custodians by moving to a contractor bid process for custodial services. He is being challenged by former teacher and educational business woman, Nadia Combs, a highly respected teacher and staff member previously employed by the school system. Combs dominated Cona in the primary election and she has a great chance to unseat this two-year incumbent who is supported by Mean-Girl Cindy Stuart and Mean-Girl Susan Valdes, a former school board member and current Florida State Representative. Valdes is also being challenged for re-election by Hillsborough classroom teacher, NPA, Laurie Rodriguez-Person and a Trump Republican supporter, Angle Urbina, in the general election.

District 5: This is an extremely heated race in the central Tampa/Temple Terrace/Seminole Heights areas between incumbent Tamara Shamburger and retired district Area Superintendent Henry "Shake" Washington. Neither have seemed greatly opposed to either Vouchers or for-profit managed Charter schools. Shamburger was initally opposed to the appointment of Superintendent Davis while Washington's campaign staff appears to be fully supportive of both Cona and Davis, Both Washington and his campaign staff and Superintendent Davis have stated publicly, "Charter Schools are here to Stay!" Political local office holder incumbents appear to lean in support of Shamburger but this race has proven to be a real show! Here, sparks really fly all the way to November.

District 7, at-large, county wide seat: This race is between incumbent and former teacher Lynn Gray and former school board member and former school district employee and private school owner Sally Harris. Gray has taught at many Hillsborough schools and also at Jesuit High School. She has the ear and support of the unions and school district employees. She is opposed to for-profit managed charter schools, generally, along with an aversion to vouchers and privatization. As a board member, she has been unafraid to "be an Army of One" pressing hard for kids, teachers and school communities. Harris was the fourth-wheel of the infamous "Mean Girls Four" along with long-gone, failed politican April Griffin, Susan Valdes and now Cindy Stuart. Harris lost her seat in 2018 to new board member and educator, Dr. Stacy Hahn, in South Tampa/South County/ South Shore areas.

As a three-time candidate, unsuccessful at that, for School Board District one in 2016, 2018 and in 2020 and as a 35 year teacher, principal, director and general director, I recommend you support and elect: Jessica Vaughn, Nadia Combs, Lynn Gray and Henry "Shake" Washington and help save our
beloved school district.  Bill Person

School Board Candidate Jessica Vaughn: Choose Wisely

"I'm incredibly disappointed that I have to write this but...if your "principles" encourage you to support a candidate who openly embraces the privatization of our public schools, a candidate who is best friends with Ken Hagan (a Hillsborough County Commissioner who was/is under FBI investigation for BREAKING THE LAW by leveraging his considerable influence to benefit developers by accepting HUGE BUNDLED contributions from them), a candidate who themselves have taken HUGE BUNDLED contributions from those same developers - despite the fact that accepting those donations put this candidate in a direct "conflict of interest" with the planning commission role he was appointed to by Ken Hagan and a candidate who can't even understand a question about equity within our schools; then you really need to re-evaluate your principles and who you claim to stand for.
---
Especially if you supported this candidate in a race with five other candidates whose platforms all embraced public schools, safety, education, equity and transparency. Who you support during times like these, speaks volumes about your character. In closing, I'm just going to leave this right here." MORE

Florida GOP Threatens Hillsborough County

Hillsborough County Srikes Back

Hillsborough County: Start school online!
We are asking that our HCPS leaders roll up their sleeves and do whatever it takes to open schools virtually on August 24th, and remain virtual until it is safe to open per guidance from medical experts.
---
CONTEXT: Richard Corcoran, the Florida GOP Education Commissioner, has sent a letter to HCPS stating that their plan to open schools virtually goes against his emergency order, which states that schools must open their campuses no later than August unless they have a recommendation from their local Department of Health.
Under pressure from the state to
keep quiet
the director of our local Department of Health Douglas A. Holt refused to make a recommendation, even though the other doctors present said it would not be safe
 to open schools.

Email Dr. Holt
 daholt@usf.edu
---
We the undersigned citizens of Hillsborough County fully expect that you will not open school campuses against medical advice, and we will hold you to that expectation as we closely monitor the upcoming emergency board meeting. HCPS must act swiftly to meet the requirements outlined in the Education Commissioner's letter, if that's what it takes to keep our community safe. Change the original plan and resubmit to the FL DOE- do not let our staff and students become part of a dangerous political experiment which will result in a revolving door of school closures and leave our most vulnerable open to illness and death. Florida GOP Wants A War With Hillsborough County

The Florida Department of Education has barred the Hillsborough County school district from moving forward with an online-only plan for the first month of the school year. In a letter addressed to Superintendent
Addison Davis and Chair Melissa Snively,
Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran said the district has only three options for
reopening schools. HERE

Hillsborough County Call Your School Board

Today I will be writing to all of our Hillsborough county school board members and asking them to delay the opening of our schools to our students, so that our teachers and support staff have more time to prepare the infrastructure needed to effectively and safely prepare our schools for students to return. It will also give us time to collect and assess more COVID19 data; so that we can properly evaluate whether or not it's even realistic, feasible and safe to offer a brick and mortar option. The safety of our students, teachers and support staff MUST be our #1 priority.

Hillsborough School Board Elections?

Tampa friends —

What are you all going to do about your School Board? There are four elections coming up in 2020; all of which should be taken seriously.

In District 1, incumbent Steve Cona, a pro privatization politician, is running for re-election and should be defeated in order to heal the Board. Thus far, the only candidate who has filed to oppose him is college student Victoria Gudbranson, who has experience as a person with a disability (which is desperately needed on the Board). It is likely that former candidate Bill Person will file as well. Who else do you think should file for this seat? Who would you support?

In District 3, incumbent Cindy Stuart may file to run for re-election, while former Democratic Progressive Caucus President and substitute teacher Jessica Vaughn has already filed to run. Who else could jump in for this seat, and who would you support?

In District 5, incumbent Tammy Shamburger has not yet filed for re-election, and no other challenger has filed with the Supervisor of Elections. Possible candidates could include former candidate and teacher Robert Pechacek, and former candidate Jacqueline Leeks. Who would be an optimal candidate for this seat? Who do you think should serve the District?

In District 7, incumbent Lynn Gray has filed to run for re-election. Her only challenger thus far is Josephine Amato — I have no idea who this person is or why she decided to run. Who would make a good candidate for this race, and who would you like to support?

I would like to see spirited primaries for each of these seats, and some candidates defeat incumbents who have sided with privatization and FLGOP donors. Hillsborough County needs attention brought to ending the school to prison pipeline, student nutrition, disability equity, testing reform, and opposition to haywire privatization. Which issues do YOU believe need to be addressed for the upcoming School Board elections? Who is the candidate that will represent those issues? Please speak up and state WHY you feel candidate X or Y should serve on the School Board!

Stay groovy,
Asher

Tampa Schools Getting Better?

The number of “A” and “B” graded schools operated by Hillsborough County Public Schools has climbed to 99 in the newest School Accountability Report data from the Florida Department of Education. HERE

FYI Among our district’s “A” schools are Plant High School in South Tampa, Steinbrenner High School in Lutz, Newsome High School in Lithia and Sickles High School in Citrus Park—which were ranked as the top 4 high schools in the Tampa Bay area last month by U.S. News & World Report. What happened to King, Hillsborough, Blake, Jefferson, Middleton,
TBT and Leto? Do the math!

Asher Edelson on The School Board Scandal

The recent leak on our School Board is upsetting. It shows our community yet another example of how dysfunctional the Board is. The sheer level of hostility between the Board members is certainly disappointing. The interactions highlighted in the La Gaceta are eye opening, and there are more photos that need to be released to confirm what was in the article. What I saw on their page was unfortunate; school board members colluding with each on how to influence elections isn’t a great thing to have out. I remember Snively pompously disdained my idea on making Election Day a school holiday, and nowadays she’s intent on being just another
right wing politician.

Her interactions with candidates and other persons show me that their faction of the Board is morally bankrupt and ready to push for more control. I am not happy with April Griffin, either, who seems to be Snively’s boogeyman. I want to see a new “factionless” faction on the Board to fight for our county and be above
this foolish pettiness.
